I whole-heartedly recommend this book! Read this book if you, or anyone you have ever loved, has fought any health battle. Sara Jade Alan has encompassed realistic hope in this story, with lots of humor and love.
This book is not a lamenting, sorrowful tale of a wispy girl going on and on about sadness and then finding inner peace enlightenment – THANK GOODNESS!
This book IS about a girl, Ellie, whom you immediately want to be friends with. Whom you identify with from the get go. She is funny, realistic, relatable, wonderfully awkward and just so real! Throughout I was laughing with Ellie, and at Ellie, and crying – I mean REAL crying – with her as well.
Sara Jade Alan is able to build the cast of characters right away with a zeal and likeability that you will find yourself routing for everyone. The relationships intertwine and through Ellie you connect with each of them. A personal favorite is Craig. I have a literary crush on him! The female characters friendship and positive support is another nice and refreshing touch.
In A Messy, Beautiful Life Ellie’s process and approach were so genuine. We all have someone affected by cancer in our life – it is terrible! Readers are not interested in another melancholy tale. The author does an excellent job of moving through the emotions and getting to the story telling and proving that life can still move forward. It was also interesting to learn about Improv through the story and get a sense of what an exhilarating and fun art form it is for the performers.
Cancer always has bad timing, but this writer doesn’t.
