For his non-fiction writing he has received a CBC Canadian Literary Award (first) and a National Magazine Award (gold). Born in Montreal, Wilson resides in Peterborough, Ontario.

that pleasure some of us look for

i read quite a bit: literary fiction, philosophy, art and culture and politics - like all, i go
to different genres for different kinds of pleasure - wilson's mezcalero is a gas, hitting the right
pleasure centers well made "detective" novels aim for - he introduces us to sanchez,
the way his mind and world works and turns - i'm reminded of the kind of things denis johnson
attempts/realizes in his detective novel - wilson is canadian gringo in mexico who
brings the eye of journalist and the mind of a writer's writer to give us that pleasure
some of us look for: a ride through the toughness of the locale and the toughness a
compelling character endures making his/her way through it all - 4/5 stars, one held
back while i wait for the next installment.

A very welcomed breath of fresh air in the classic crime/detective genre, with a compelling protagonist and drum tight storytelling. Highly recommended for lovers of contemporary fiction that can transcend genre stereotypes. Looking forward to further explorations with Detective Sanchez.

I met T.E.”Tim” Wilson when he joined a book club I was part of in Mazatlan, Mexico. There were 4 members and we met over a 4 month period. The central premise was that each member would choose a book and we agreed that we would all endorse the selections of our fellow members. Well Tim had just completed Mescalero and proposed his book almost apologetically, hoping he wouldn’t be deemed overly self promotional. Tim came across as an intelligent, thoughtful and self effacing guy, but I must admit, I didn’t have particularly high expectations. I was quickly disabused of that notion as I became totally engrossed in this magnificent, captivating and well written book. Great writers can describe a simple setting or mood in such compelling and riveting style that it simply sweeps you out of your world and into the one they’re portraying Tim has this ability, in spades!! As the book ends, you’re left thirsting for more and fortunately, that yearning will be satisfied, as he’s completed the second book!!! You are going to love it!!

One of the Best Crime Stories I've Read

Now, this book. Let me tell you about this book. When I went to search for adventure books with transgender characters in them, I didn’t expect to find much. I certainly didn’t expect to find one of the absolute best-written crime books I have read so far. The mystery isn’t the most surprising and neither is the resolution, but it doesn’t have to be. That isn’t the goal. It’s about the journey and the journey… The journey is amazing. T. E. Wilson has a way to write that pulls you in and does not let you go. The words keep you in, especially because of the imaginative writing style. Vivid descriptions like “The heat hit him like a wet pillow”, it just makes reading FUN. To be honest, I’ve never read anything like it. I ripped through this book within three days, I just couldn’t put it down.

And then there’s the main character, Detective Ernesto Sànches. Born Cristina, he is a complicated man who I, even after reading the entire book, still can’t quite pin down. On the one hand, he’s your typical troubled detective character with an addiction to various substances and who displays erratic (and at times scary) behavior, but who also has endless compassion for the less fortunate and a strong moral compass. On the other hand, he’s also so much more than that. His facets are many and they go deep.

He transitioned when he was young, but his transgender experience is only one piece of his story. It comes up from time to time, in mentionings and little situations that I'm sure a lot of us can relate to. (And the author really does treat these things with utmost care) But Ernesto doesn’t get reduced to just his “transness”. I think at his core, he is just a man on a journey, looking for purpose and a reason in life.
