About the Author
While studying history and pre-med at Harvard University, Dr. Joseph H. Fitzgerald became interested in the history of exploration and mapping, which later led him to purchase his first antique maps while stationed in Germany as an Army paratrooper in the early 1960s. While later practicing Urology in Miami, Florida he became involved in the Historical Association of Southern Florida (now HistoryMiami) and served as its Chairman of the Board from 1981-83. In the 1980s Dr. Fitzgerald also curated two exhibits at the museum – “Mapping the Shape of Florida” and “Quest for the Indies – Routes of Exploration”. He went on to found the annual Miami International Map Fair in 1993, at the time the only continuous map fair in the western hemisphere and it continues as a popular event to this day. Dr. Fitzgerald continues to be an avid map collector, an active member of many historical and map organizations in the US and Europe, and a map appraiser for institutions and individuals.
