HASH(0x9bcc19d8) out of 5 stars Enjoyable Josei Series Nov. 5 2013
By Talvi - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Midnight Secretary Volume 2 continues the story of Vampire executive Tohma and his secretary Satozuka. Now that she's successfully handling the workload of being an executive secretary (and occasional meal), Satozuka grapples with the heartache of arranging her boss' feedings while still allowing him to have a snack as well. But it is a long talk with Tohma's older brother that convinces Satozuka her position with Tohma is unhealthy - and she finds herself transferred to a subsidiary company at his behest. But Tohma isn't willing to let her go that easily and Satozuka herself is starting to realize just how much she needs her boss back.

Volume 2 finishes what I consider the 'introduction' arc that establishes Satozuka's and Tohma's relationship. She realizes her feelings for the cagey vampire and he realizes pride is a stupid reason to lose the most valuable thing to ever come into his life. A chance encounter with Tohma's mother will also give Satozuka more insight into the vampire and why he is so difficult with humans like herself. In future volumes, their relationship will be tested as outside forces come to play and major players begin to force Tohma's hand.

Tomu Ohmi's artwork is perhaps not as nuanced as her contemporaries but she does know how to tell an interesting and mature (read: Josie) story. I am looking forward to volume 3 as the meat of the story begins to unfold.

Received as an ARC from the publisher.

HASH(0x9bcc1a2c) out of 5 stars The enigma that is Director Touma! June 6 2014
By Jamie E. - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
This manga series is for mature audience readers only. Oh my! While the last volume has some mature content this one is much more geared to adult manga fans. Office, vampire romance here we go!

In this volume Kaya is coming to terms with her feelings for Director Touma. However when his brother confronts her about it, her emotional turmoil over him causes her to change positions in the company. Kyouhei Touma sends her on such a roller coaster. He is cold toward her one moment yet desiring her blood the next. I must give Kaya some due credit. she puts up with him and all his issues and still maintains her duties as an amazing secretary.

Like I stated above, this series is ramping up the sexual content. So steamy scenes will occur! I love the artwork and how the characters are drawn. Their expressions and body language says so much into the story!

I must say though that the sexist roles taken get a bit annoying. The expectations of secretaries, the fact that they are all females and all board members, etc are men gets frustrating. So I was less than a fan about the stereotypical roles shown of everyone.

Overall, this is turning into an interesting series. Not sure how long it will last. The plot seems to indicate only a few more volumes but we shall see if more depth is presented in future volumes.

I received a review copy from Viz via Edelweiss. All opinion expressed in this review are strictly my own.

[More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

I am really enjoying this series. It’s so much better than I thought it’d be.

Kaya is getting so caught up in her feelings for Kyohei. She doesn’t take forever to realize it, though, which I appreciated. And then she doesn’t take forever to do something about it, either. It’s so refreshing seeing a female character doing something about her feelings, not hiding from them. On the other hand Kyohei is running from his, in total denial. And while I’m sure that there’s still going to be drama related to it, it seems like Kaya is realizing how he feels, as well. It’s a definite step in the right direction, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes from here. Also, there was some actual smut in this volume, and that was nice.

Then there’s the whole work part of the story, and how Kaya focuses on her job, is good at it, and is firm about doing it. That’s so nice to see, and I really like that Kaya doesn’t waver about any of it, because it’s important to her, and she will win that argument against Kyohei.

Their whole characters and dynamic is refreshing to me, I guess, since I see so much more of the weak, malleable heroine. There’s still quite a bit to explore in this series, I think, including their pasts and their relationship developing even more.

I’m looking forward to the next volume, and am enjoying having the releases bimonthly a whole lot.

My favorite guilty pleasure read in manga. "Midnight Secretary Vol 2" picks up where vol 1 left off in that Kyohei has had a taste of his perfect secretary's blood and of course, of course, it is the tastiest of all.

That doesn't mean he's stopped his carousing and male-chauvo ways because he is a vampire after all but Kaya provides a grumpy counter to his bull dozing ways. In the meantime, she meets Kyohei's mother and finds out a bit more of his vampire lineage.

This is the volume where we get the good sexy soapy scenario as Kaya is forced to leave Kyohei's employ but we still get what will be possessive Kyohei's "You're mine" blather and well, she kinda is.

It is fun and regressive and doesn't even bother hiding it. If you don't like the tongue-in-cheek retro gender politics or macho puffery is a turn off, then this is the volume where you may check out, but to me, it is just a lot of fun because there is a subversive quality to it and also, Kaya continues to win me over.

I really enjoy this series! It's got such a great mix of vampires with modern taste that it's just perfect. I love the artwork, and the bale cue of work and romance, with just the right amount of steaminess!
