Product Description

Review

"I consider MBCT to be an effective means of preventing and treating depression and enhancing emotional well-being. This workbook gives practical advice for applying the principles of MBCT in your life. I recommend it highly."--Andrew Weil, MD, author of 8 Weeks to Optimum Health and Spontaneous Happiness

"Wisdom, illuminated and applied! We could ask for nothing more from three of the world's most gifted and caring clinicians, who provide us with a clear and practical guide to understanding and strengthening the mind. This workbook is a generous gift that can help you relieve depression and anxiety, improve your health, and enhance your way of being in the world."--Daniel J. Siegel, MD, author of Mindsight

"Fantastic….[It] functions as a trusted friend, counselor, and guide."--from the Foreword by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD

"What could be more fabulous than this? An evidence-based treatment for depression translated into a workbook that everyone can use. This is a treatment that has circled the globe for a reason--it works. Fortunately, the authors who translated the treatment into a workbook are the very people who developed the treatment in the first place; all three are expert clinicians and scientists. My advice: 'Try this.'"--Marsha M. Linehan, PhD, ABPP, Professor and Director, Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics, University of Washington

"Three of the world's leading authorities on psychotherapy and mindfulness have developed a workbook of great clarity and value. It outlines an easy-to-follow, step-by-step program for how to train our minds out of repetitive loops and find states of peace."--Paul Gilbert, PhD, Head, Mental Health Research Unit, University of Derby, United Kingdom

"The strategies in this book have truly changed my life. I feel a thousand times better today than ever before. Like anyone else, I still get sad and anxious sometimes, but it happens much less frequently and I'm better equipped to deal with it. I definitely plan to continue practicing mindfulness for the long term."--Alain K.

“The authors are leading experts in developing the scientific theories and experiential skills of how mindfulness can help to disrupt the ruminative cycle that perpetuates depression….This book is written and arranged in such a way that the layman with no prior knowledge of cognitive theory of depression can easily understand why and how MBCT can be of benefit to them….This workbook is highly recommended to anyone who is interested in MBCT for self-improvement or self-help in coping with depression, as well as to mental health professionals who want to learn mindfulness skills for personal enhancement or for teaching their own patients. I have now incorporated this workbook as a companion resource into my own practice of cognitive-behavioral therapy. My daily practice of mindfulness skills has also strengthened my personal ability to develop moment-to-moment case conceptualizations for my patient's problems during each therapeutic encounter"
(International Journal of Social Psychology 2014-12-30)

The Mindful Way Workbook: An 8-Week Program To Free Yourself From Depression and Emotional Distress, by John Teasdale, Mark Williams and Zindel Segal, is a wonderful way to step into the world of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). The information and experiential exercises are especially well thought out and presented, making them accessible to those most in need. This book is ideal for anyone who has suffered from depression, may be moderately depressed, anxious or simply distressed by life’s challenges. The Mindful Way demonstrates how the habitual strategies we use in an attempt to make ourselves feel better often don’t work. It provides us with tools and a way of being with our present experience, whether painful or pleasurable, opening us to new possibilities and more skillful responses. MBCT, while commonly delivered in a group format, is often not available to those who would like to learn it. The Mindful Way Workbook is easy to use on your own, with a friend or therapist, as a reference or as a support if you are already in a group. It makes the practice of Mindfulness available to everyone.

This workbook is highly recommended. The authors are to be commended on producing this workbook, which complements their "Mindful way through depression" book. The workbook is well crafted and presented such that each chapter is easy to digest and understand. The key points are clearly expressed and demonstrated in the dialogue examples. The accompanying CD has all three main authors leading the guided mindfulness practices.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy is a treatment that has been tested and proven to help people who have suffered from recurrent depression. There is emerging evidence that MBCT can be helpful more broadly. The authors have done a great service in making the program so available in such a workbook.

This book delivers on its promise, unlike so many well intentioned (or otherwise) self-help books. Clear, well bolstered by science and research, and rooted in the undeniable wisdom of South Asia. You can go on suffering or you can get this book and its companion work dealing with depression.

I have struggled with mild to moderate depression and anxiety my whole life. I am 6 weeks into the program and have seen a major change in myself. Be prepared to put in the work with this program though... It takes about an hour a day (on average) for 6 days a week for 8 weeks. Definitely an effective program though! Without the depression/anxiety weighing me down, I've been eating better, exercising and taking care of myself. It has been invaluable to me. As my husband says "I have my wife back" :)

If you can dedicate the time to actually practise the suggested meditations each week, and written assignments, this journey has the ability to raise you out of depression, burnout, etc. It seems "difficult" at first, the long meditations, but if you understand it's about retraining your brain, and hang in there, it is very much worth it.

I would highly recommend this book to everyone, not just people who have or are currently suffering from depression, and other mental difficulties. This book provides accurate scientific evidence and well thought out meditations. This book is especially useful if you have no experience in meditating at all, since it comes jam packed with inquiries from past participants of the 8 week program. It really put a lot of my own emotions into perspective and has helped me a lot.
