If you haven't see River on Netflix, login and binge the 6 episodes now. It's brilliant. The series is dark and sad and happy and oddly moving. I was so hoping to see this offered as a Region 1 set, but so far, it's only available to us via streaming. Thankfully, I do have a PAL 2 player, because I had to own this (and loan it and the player to my mom, who has not got Netflix, but would love it!).

“River” is a 2015 six-episode British psychological drama and murder mystery, created and written by Abi Morgan, and originally appearing on BBC One. Its story line centers around a troubled and conflicted middle-age detective working in the London police force, who is devastated by the recent murder of his female partner, and his best friend. While he is leading the inquiry into the murder of his close friend and colleague, he is haunted by recurring hallucinations, in which a vivid manifestation of his deceased partner regularly appears to him, and seems to be talking to him, and giving him guidance regarding the investigation. This technique essentially functions as a type of flashback, and it provides the viewer with vital background information, which facilitates a more complete understanding of the details of the investigation, and the progression of the story line. The performances of the lead actors, Stellan Skarsgard and Nicola Walker, are absolutely outstanding, as are the performances of the members of the talented supporting cast. “River” is a decidedly intelligent, intriguing, and captivating psychological drama and murder mystery, and I found it to be extremely engaging and entertaining. “River” features superb plot and character development, as well as great acting performances, and it definitely merits a five-star rating, along with an enthusiastic recommendation.

Far more than just a great detective series, RIVER is a soulful tour de force that hits you on a deep emotional level not commonly experienced with most series. The story interweaves between the living and the dead and is brought together by a brilliant cast. The most memorable scene is towards the end where Skarsgard and Walker exchange their last moments before dancing to 'I Love to Love' on a London street. Truly unforgettable and heartbreaking!!

I felt cheated. I need subtitles to watch movies. The product description for "River" stated that the DVD has English subtitles. There were none. I have a multi-region DVD/BluRay player and the subtitle function works for all of the previous and subsequent DVDs I've played on it.

BEWARE NO SUBTITLES

I love the show and would have given this review 5-Stars but THERE IS NO SUBTITLES on this DVD set. I am having a hard time understanding what is being said since I am an English speaking American. So BEWARE NO SUBTITLES! If I had known this I would never have purchased to DVD set.
