I first heard of this strange phenomenon when the author was interviewed on a radio show. Yes, there are unfortunate people that go missing everyday. Some by choice, some by accident and some against their will. However, this book, which is part of a series of books, focuses on cases from national parks and the rural north west that stand out because of specific elements such as clusters within an area, age ranges of the missing, how the victim literally vanished sometimes within several feet of others and in many of the cases when someone is found, the strange yet intriguing stories that they tell.

The reader will find the cases so interesting that that they cannot avoid theorizing and even discussing some of the cases with friends and family. While the author does not come to any conclusion as to the cause of some of these cases, he does offer suggestions as to why these cases defy logic, the laws of nature and in some instances our very own belief system.

Is there something lurking out there in the woods that is waiting for an opportunity to snatch you or your loved ones away? Something that led our ancestors to convey these strange tales seen today as myths, legends and children's stories designed to frighten us to stay close to home and keep a watchful eye? After reading the true cases compiled in this book...it would seem so..

I bought this book a couple of months ago and have just read it for a second time from cover to cover. The subject matter is fascinating and it is thoroughly researched. While the author may have strong suspicions about what happened in some cases, he is quite restrained in his views and leaves it up to the reader to ponder the event and come to their own conclusion, if any conclusion can be reached. The events as described in the book, more often than not, has the reader scratching his or her head. As a solo wilderness hiker for many years, this book has me seriously thinking of traveling only with a partner from now on.
