So I'm trying to understand these four- and five-star reviews for this book because, honestly, unless we are grading this on potential or the story having been written by a precocious Labrador retriever, I can't give this more than two stars.
The book starts out with our h, Samantha (who goes by Sam, but who is also referred to as Belle by her BFF and H ... yeah, I don't get it either), beginning her new job at some fancy-schmany company in Charlotte, NC. She's lived in this city for a while - apparently, she had a PT job as a cleaning woman for the past year or so - but her BFF Jess was able to get her a job as an Executive Assistant with this much-admired corporation. Apparently, the hiring standards for Executive Assistants aren't that tough any more b/c just any ol' person can be one, according to this book. (And I'm not talking about the fact that she cleaned houses for a while b/c that has nothing to do with it. I'm talking more about her intelligence, or lack thereof. More details below...) And she's lucky enough to work some pretty manageable hours as well. Most days, she leaves the office @ 4 pm and, if she stays at work past 6 pm, she's considered super busy. And her crazy workload! When she talks about her boss flooding her Inbox with emails b/c he is keeping her super busy, she says she got a minimum of 10 emails that day. TEN!!! Can you believe that? OMG, she must be overwhelmed, the poor thing. How can she possibly handle as many as TEN emails in one day???
And I guess we are to accept the fact that she was hired as the Executive Assistant to the COO of the company (some dude named Adam) but she met him for the first time on her first day of work??? So Mr. COO had nothing to do with the hiring of his own assistant? Didn't interview her or get to decide whether or not she would be a good fit for him?
So Sam meets some weirdo guy named Logan at a bar early on in the book. They date for a bit, but she feels no spark, he creeps her out, says "I love you" to her after just two weeks of dating, they break up. At the same time, she's been wowed by some hot dude in her office building who she keeps bumping into in the elevator. After she breaks up with Logan, she meets this hot dude at a club and they talk and eventually start dating.
Now, here's the part I really can't accept in this story ... hot dude (whose name is Tanner) is actually the CEO of the company where Sam is working. The friggin' Chief Executive Officer!!! And she apparently dates him for all of seven months (yes, SEVEN MONTHS) without knowing who he is. Is our heroine deaf, dumb and blind? Oh, sorry, that's an insult to deaf, dumb and blind people everywhere. The girl would be a friggin' world-class, grade-A MORON for being the Executive Assistant to the COO of a company and not be able to identify the CEO. Her BFF is the same - she was the one who got Sam the job in the first place b/c she's worked at the company for one year already and she also doesn't know who is the big cheese? And Tanner was appointed the CEO of the company four years ago. FOUR YEARS!! And how they found out was that Jess found a newspaper clipping from four years ago, when Tanner's father named him as new CEO of the company, along with accompanying photo with said newspaper article. So they are obviously in the public eye, but those two yahoos had no idea who is he?!? How the heck did this peabrain get a job as an Executive Assistant to the COO of a successful company when she didn't even know who the heck the CEO is???
The whole book was just a mess, IMO. The potential was there as the plot line was interesting, but nothing was fleshed out in great detail. I am still trying to figure out why Tanner and Sam "fell in love" because I felt as much of a connection between the two of them as I do when I look at a piece of lint and slice of cheese trying to get it on. In fact, I couldn't connect with any of the characters in this book so really didn't feel that vested in the story or how things turned out.
So, basically, in a nutshell, the story goes like this: Sam starts new job, meets weirdo Logan, dumps Logan, meets hottie Tanner, dates Tanner, finds out Tanner is her CEO, gets mad that he lied to her about his identity, they break up for a short while and then get back together. Meanwhile, someone is sending Sam threatening notes and stalking her. That someone ends up being weirdo Logan (no big shock). He assaults her (did we really need this in the storyline??), she ends up fighting back and calling 911, he gets arrested, she recovers, Tanner is there to support her and proposes marriage. End of story. There, you just saved yourself 99 cents. Go get yourself a Slurpie and call it a day.
