A DOMINEERING CAPTAIN, HIS PET PALM TREE & A DEVILISH CREW MAKE LIFE ABOARD A WWII CARGO SHIP MISERABLE FOR A CARGO OFFICER.
Henry Fonda re-created his Broadway hit for this 1955 film that was mostly directed by Fonda's frequent collaborator, John Ford (Young Mr. Lincoln, My Darling Clementine)--an ailing Ford was replaced at some point by Mervyn LeRoy--and the results are exceptionally fine. A perfect cast, including James Cagney's irascible captain, William Powell's thoughtful physician, and Jack Lemmon's Oscar-winning Ensign Pulver, give Fonda the right boost to portray his ennui-burdened officer with dignity, self-effacing humor, and not a trace of self-pity. A wonderful film. --Tom Keogh --This text refers to the VHS Tape edition.

Great Story, great cast, great meaning. If I had my choice of only a dozen movies to recommend to anyone, this would be one of them.
After fifty years, it's still an inspiring story of how sometimes small, seemingly insignificant details and the consideration of the human factor contribute to effective leadership.
In fact, this film is still in use as a motivational tool in the U.S. Naval Services.
I highly recommend this movie.
The movie stars James Cagney as Capt.Morton,Henry Fonda as Mister Roberts,Jack Lemmon as Ensign Pulver,William Powell as Doc and a wonderful cast of supporting players.
The story takes place in WW2 aboard a supply ship which plies the back waters of the Pacific.Mister Roberts desperately wants into the war having had it with being a bridesmaid but never a bride,so to speak.Every week he hands in a transfer request to the irrascable Capt.Morton and every week it's rejected. This goes on throughout the whole movie and at one point Roberts makes a bargain with the Captain to stop writing transfers so the crew would finally get their first shore leave in over a year.Pulver is a general no show around the ship, preferring to stick in his cabin and planning to do things he never carries out.By total accident he bumps into the Captain who doesn't even know he's been aboard the ship for 14 months! As the film winds along we see and easily sympathize with the crew and Roberts'frustration at the actions and taciturn nature and demeanour of the Captain. In the end Roberts finally gets a transfer off the ship, but suffers a cruel twist of fate.
The movie moves at a good clip generally and the personnels' various frustrations with their superiors and /or themselves builds nicely throughout.Read more ›
This real gem directed by John Ford and Merven LeRoy is based on the Tony Award-winning play of the same name. Actor Jack Lemmon (One of my favorite performers of all time) makes quite an impression as a hapless Ensign named Pulver. While William Powell (in his last film) gives a
measured sense of dignity to Doc. MR. ROBERTS has such a stellar cast, after you watch the film, you can't imagine anyone else in those roles. For not having any battle scenes, the film, still manges to be one of the best WWII movies ever made, thanks to a great script and great cast .
MR. ROBERTS has humor, drama and an honesty that is quite rare. The film holds up well for being almost 50 years old
The DVD has a heartfelt Commentary from Lemmon that I will treasure always. There are 2 video excerpts, one features a tribute to the cast, and the other has Jane Fonda paying tribute to her father (discussing the play and the film). The disc also has 9 vintage theatrical trailers . For me though, hearing the late Jack Lemmon's comments makes the DVD, extra special...Highly Recommended
Jack Lemmon won a supporting Oscar for his performance as Ensign Pulver, a kind of lazy, but slyly resourceful Walter Mitty type who talks a great game but never follows through... James Cagney is the Captain, a sour, resentful man who mercilessly badgers Mister Roberts and grossly neglects the morale of his crew. He is just perfect. The way he bellows "Mister Roberts!" or way he trembles out the line, "Mister...Mister...this time you've gone too far" delights the audience. William Powell, in his last film, plays the ship's wise and ever diplomatic doc with graceful precision.Read more ›

Funny and entertaining "guy" movie with a great cast and lots of laughs for a navy movie .Published 15 months ago by G. R.
Mr. Roberts is a classic World War II movie, with big stars and a great story line detailing life at sea away from the action and the glory. Read morePublished on Jan. 15 2011 by Sea Tiger
Mister Roberts (Widescreen)
This is an excellent comedy, with a top-notch cast. It hasn't lost its appeal, despite its age(1955).
Given the "classic" status of this movie, it seems meaningless to discuss the content for this review. Read morePublished on July 18 2004 by Yarby
I loved this movie when I saw it many years ago, it's timeless and still funny after all these years. I'm so glad it's available on DVD and now part of my movie collection.Published on July 15 2003
Fonda, Cagney, Powell, & Lemmon! This is one of my favorites. A captain bligh type (Cagney) is stood up to by the first officer (Fonda), until a deal it cut so the men can... Read morePublished on June 29 2003 by JediMack
This is a great war movie although it's not about the aspect of war that we usually see in Hollywood. There's an explosion, but it's not from enemy action. Read morePublished on May 31 2003 by Ken Bailey
