About the Author

Jan Karon, born Janice Meredith Wilson in the foothills of North Carolina, was named after the title of a popular novel, Janice Meredith.

Jan wrote her first novel at the age of ten. "The manuscript was written on Blue Horse notebook paper, and was, for good reason, kept hidden from my sister. When she found it, she discovered the one curse word I had, with pounding heart, included in someone's speech. For Pete's sake, hadn't Rhett Butler used that very same word and gotten away with it? After my grandmother's exceedingly focused reproof, I've written books without cussin' ever since."

Several years ago, Karon left a successful career in advertising to move to the mountain village of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and write books. "I stepped out on faith to follow my lifelong dream of being an author," she says. "I made real sacrifices and took big risks. But living, it seems to me, is largely about risk."

Enthusiastic booksellers across the country have introduced readers of all ages to Karon's heartwarming books. At Home in Mitford, Karon's first book in the Mitford series, was nominated for an ABBY by the American Booksellers Association in 1996 and again in 1997. Bookstore owner, Shirley Sprinkle, says, "The Mitford Books have been our all-time fiction bestsellers since we went in business twenty-five years ago. We've sold 10,000 of Jan's books and don't see any end to the Mitford phenomenon."

Brenda W. Furman is Jan’s younger sister and the perfect person to shape a volume that contains the very cream of nine bestselling novels.

If you're a fan of the Mitford Series, you'll enjoy this volume! It's full of excerpts from the books in the series, as well as character profiles (some of whom I'd forgotten), recipes (including Esther Bolick's Orange Marmalade Cake.) It even has a crossword puzzle -- but it may require re-reading books to get all the answers! It's the kind of book you can pick up any time and just read a page or two. A warning to those who haven't yet read all the books: because the excerpts are scattered, you may come across details you haven't yet read -- not good if you don't like knowing the end of a story before you've read it!

Anything Jan Karon writes is great, but I thought this book would have a little more new content than it has. The rearrangement of previous writing on my Kindle was not a good choice on my part. It would have been better if I bought the book in hard copy and set it next to my bed as suggested by the title!

A charming walk down memory lane. For those who love the series and wish Mitford was their hometown, The Mitford Bedside Companion brings together the best moments with the citizens of Mitford we've come to know so well. With a complete list of characters, recipes, photos, sketches, words of wisdom from the author and more, The Mitford Bedside Companion is a nostalgic trip back to that little town we call home, even if we've only been there in our hearts. A keepsake volume to treasure and read whenever you're longing to go back for a visit.

HASH(0x9c312558) out of 5 stars A visit with loved friends. . . Nov. 10 2006

This is a kind of omnibus volume of all the "best parts" of the series, which I've enjoyed as it developed. I can see its pleasure for someone who might lack the stamina to reread the entire series--a shut-in, perhaps. Also, its portability is nice for those of us who read while waiting. Really, it is as refreshing as a visit to familiar country--just the nicest kind of reunion!

I wasn't totally sure I needed this book to add to the rest of my Mitford books, but I'm glad I took the chance. I'm enjoying favorite parts of the series again, along with the author's rememberances. The book has Jan Karon's notes about how Mitford came to be. The perfect book to read while waiting in the doctor's office or maybe stuck in traffic. It's bound to make you smile and not let your blood pressure rise!
