This comp’s subtitle title really says it all – fourteen campy songs from the 1960’s with goofy go-go beats, silly lyrics and sassy vocals. The artists featured all set out to capitalize on the radio-friendly pop sounds of Jackie Wilson, Solomon Burke and early Motown singles, but ended up with a stiffer un-hip version. It’s a lighthearted romp through the soft side of the oldies underground, and as long as you don’t mind the surface material (and a little surface noise) you can get through it A-OK. Oddly enough the song that resonates the most is a Who/Move-like mod smasher from Plastic Penny called “Your Way To Tell Me Go”. It’s a great freak-beat number, but I can’t figure out how it found its way onto this comp, where it sticks out like sore thumb among all the treacle.
