Bebel Gilberto is back with Momento, her third solo album, presenting some of her most elegant and personal musical statements yet. Bebel Gilberto's soulful restrained blend of Brazilian and international music took the world by surprise with the release of Tanto Tempo in 2000. Although Gilberto has an impressive genealogy she never had any intention of following in her parents' footsteps. She developed her own unique style moving to New York City and working with artists as varied as David Byrne, Caetano Veloso, Towa Tei (Deee Lite) and Thievery Corporation. By the time she recorded Tanto Tempo, she had already forged her own musical identity, combining Brazilian pop, European sophistication, and cutting edge electronica with a unique silky vocal style which entranced audiences all around the world. While Tanto Tempo became the third biggest selling Brazilian album in US chart history. It also earned her two Latin Grammy nominations for Best Brazilian Album and Best New Artist. On her second self-titled collection, Gilberto aimed for a more traditional sound. I called the album Bebel Gilberto to make a statement about my name, the singer says. I grew up cautiously, in terms of being a songwriter, not knowing how people might react. There are still touches of Electronica on Bebel Gilberto, but it's largely a showcase for her sweetly affecting vocals and polished songwriting. The album captured positive press worldwide and earned her another Grammy nomination - Best World Music Album. `I am honored that people look forward to hear my music, which is the biggest inspiration an artist can have. Bebel's long awaited new release draws on the graceful, low-key electronica of Tanto Tempo and the enchanting, acoustic simplicity of her second self-titled album. Gilberto's voice is presented in a variety of settings that showcase her magical delivery and subtle, powerful emotions. On Momento Gilberto also comes into her own as a songwriter, writing or cowriting the majority of the songs, and delivers three impressive covers. Momento was made with the help of such diverse producers as Guy Sigsworth and the band Brazilian Girls and was recorded in three of Bebel's favorite cities London, Rio de Janeiro and New York. The new CD is as forward thinking and dynamic as we've come to expect from Gilberto, an artist with an omnivorous creative bent. Momento's blend of samba, pop, bossa, electronica and Gilberto's growing confidence as both singer and writer, catapults her into he first rank of international performers. There is no category that can contain her, save one Bebel Music. Welcome to this `Momento.'

Recorded in Rio de Janeiro, London and New York, the album is a shimmering piece of laidback songwriting that sits comfortably between the electronic simplicity of her debut Tanto Tempo" and the acoustic sophistication of her eponymous sophomore effort.
From opening track "Momento", it's an extremely relaxing listen, beautifully steered by Gilberto's soothing vocal style and keen ear for a melody. But it's also capable of delivering good on the odd risky moment.
A cover version of Cole Porter's "Night And Day" might have been easy to get wrong; but is made all the more intimate by Gilberto's breathy delivery. While the presence of Guy Sigsworth (of Bjork, Madonna and Frou Frou/Imogen Heap fame) ensures the album also retains a distinctly mainstream appeal that's capable of broadening her appeal.
Highlights, of which there are many, include "Bring Back The Love", which blends bossa and electronica to seemless effect, C"lose To You", which drops a nice Oriental flavour late on and sounds like a Tracey Thorn offering, and "Cacada", a song penned by her uncle Chico Buarque, which offers a more upbeat vibe and includes some wonderful flute.
Another favourite "Tranquilo" was recorded with Orquestra Imperial (the big band founded around three young men who count arguably among Brazil's most inventive musicians/producers: Kassin, Moreno Veloso and Domenico) and genuinely succeeds in recapturing the magic of Rio at the height of a warm summer's evening.
"Um Segundo" also seduces with its lush vocal layering and playful quality, while "Words" closes things out in suitably beautiful fashion by setting Gilberto's breathy delivery against a lonesome acoustic guitar. It's a lovely finish to a quietly intoxicating listen that marks another major triumph for Gilberto.

The sensual, slow burn of her vocals and rythym allow the listener to get carried away to another place, a place where time stands still, begging one to abandon all earthly cares in favor of romantic splendor. "Momento", the opening track and CD title, peaks into Gilberto's world, with a poetic recount of pieces of her personal puzzle. "Bring Back the Love" includes a hushed moan in the background, with a steady beat and almost chant like command....
"Close to You" is about as sensual as anything you are apt to hear these days. It absolutely implores the listener to drop the material concerns to beckon one's lover..... sexy and sensual indeed.
Gilbeto's take on the standard " Night and Day" breathes new life into a romantic classic. She whispers through the urgency of this song with an understated passion, leading one to believe that the object of affection will receive the boil over of her desire. Such delivery is what illustrates a mood, making for true "mood" music.
The remaining tunes are at turns festive, contemplative and always engaging. Give way to the temptation; Bebel Gilberto offers a sublime summer album that is guarenteed to satisfy.
