Review

"Don't start this novel on a week night. Like the boys in the book, once in, I was committed ... An old-fashioned chase in the great, pageturner tradition. I was with the boys all the way down the river - and half-asleep at work the next day." -- Rick Thomason, The Walton Sun

Product Description

TOM AND HUCK TAKE ON THE SOPRANOS! A PAGE-TURNING FIRST NOVEL FROM AN AWARD-WINNING TRAVEL WRITER!
Set in the wilds of Western North Carolina – near historic Cold Mountain – the story turns on two teen brothers' chance discovery of a drug dealers' money drop in the knothole of a tree. The impoverished boys enjoy the "fruit" of "the money tree" until they are caught in flagrante by the mafiosi whose money it is. (At the same time, they witness the murder of a pot farmer wrongly thought by the dealers of being the one who’s robbing them.)

The boys narrowly escape, setting off a wild, downriver chase through the trackless Green River Wilderness – a chase that pits unarmed country boys and armed-to-the-teeth city men in a "guerrilla" war to the death.

I found the descriptions used in the book to be delightful and sometimes they stretched my imagination. Having lived in Western North Carolina I found the setting to be totally authentic. The author obviously knows this country well. I became friends with the two boys; days after finishing the book, I found myself wondering about them and what they might be doing. The book is fast-paced and exciting and not one easily put down. I am a senior citizen and have recommended it to friends. It is refreshing not to have your mind "garbaged-up" with obsenities. This book belongs on the shelves of all school libraries.

As an avid reader I often am unsatisfied with a shot in the dark selection. The Money Tree was a Bulls eye! I could not put it down. I wish it went on forever. If Sam Mills ever writes again, I'll be first in line at the signing. Get it, and read it. That's all I can say. You will agree!

I have never heard of Sam Mills until reading The Money Tree. What a great read! I enjoyed his writing style and plot and the book was totally engrossing. All I can say is I hope he writes 10 more like it. This is a classic page turner that everyone will enjoy. Play it again, Sam!

One of the best adventure stories I've read. Thanks to Mills' vivid descriptions you feel like you're braving the river with Mitch and Lee through every page. I would recommend this book to anyone with the spirit for a great adventure. Definitely "Two Thumbs Up!"
