A celebration of Tove Jansson's legacy, one hundred years after her birth
Tove Jansson's Moomin stories made her one of the most beloved Scandinavian authors of the twentieth century. Jansson's whimsical tales of Moominvalley resonate with children for their lighthearted spirit, and with adults for their incisive commentary on the banality of everyday life. The year 2014 marks the centenary of her birth, and Jansson is being honored with events in Japan, Scandinavia, England, Germany, Russia, Australia, Italy, Spain, and France. Drawn & Quarterly is joining the festivities by releasing Moomin Deluxe: Volume One, a slipcased hardcover collection of the complete Tove Jansson-penned Moomin comic strip, replete with all of her most popular storylines and original pencil sketches.
It has been more than sixty years since the Moomin comic strip debuted in the London Evening News. By the end of its run in 1975, Moomin was syndicated in more than forty newspapers around the world and hailed for its light-handed, charming stories. The comics were revived in 2005 by Drawn & Quarterly and published to widespread acclaim, sparking a new generation of devoted Moomin fans with international editions around the world. Moomin Deluxe: Volume One celebrates the classic comics the world adores, and will feature an essay about Tove's work on the Moomin strip.

Review
"Sixty years after their original serialization - and to celebrate Jansson's centenary - the fanciful comic strip frolics of the hippo-like Moomins are collected together in one volume, handsome and big enough to hug." - Globe & Mail Best Books of 2014
"With a sincere childlike nature and a stoic acceptance of misadventure . . . Moomin and company - Moominmamma, Snufkin, Stinky and Snork Maiden, to name a few - emerge from each story full of tolerance and quiet humor." - The New York Times
"As a strip, there is nothing really all that much like Moomin . . . You could read entire anthologies of comic strips that do not contain the sadness and truth that Jansson gets into three panels there. That is ultimately Jansson's real gift: stuffing so, so much into the tiniest of spaces. I can only imagine how world-expanding that would seem to a child. As an adult, it's an overstuffed reminder of how horrible it is to crave simplicity." - National Post
"Tove Jansson . . . created a quirky, original comic strip masterpiece . . . Moomins are the vehicles through which Jansson explores everything that's laughable, charming, laudable and suspect about being human." - Myla Goldberg, NPR on the Moomin Series

About the author

Tove Jansson (1914-2001) was born in Helsinki, and was an illustrator and political cartoonist for the left-leaning, anti-Fascist magazine Garm. She created a long-running comic strip and a series of children's books featuring the much-loved hippopotamus-like character, Moomintroll. She is also the author of eleven novels and short-story collections for adults, including The Summer Book and The True Deceiver. In 1994, she was awarded the Prize of the Swedish Academy.

Absolutely beautiful print detail, great quality cover and box (sturdy, smooth and colourful), perfect size for the illustrations' sake.
Includes an original poster inside, and 28 pages at the end dedicated to Tove Jansson's character studies for the Moomin comic strip, annotated and in facsimile print (see pictures). A yellow ribbon keeps track of one's page.
Wonderfully put together, and will last over a lifetime. Tove would be proud. I've half a mind to buy several to give them as presents in years to come.

The book is predominantly black and white (which is because the original strips were produced for newspapers) and thankfully nobody thought it would be a good idea to colourise them. This would have been a major disaster. All five original collections are included and they emanate a delightful mix of humour and gentle satire, played out beautifully in the delightful style of Jansson. Even in these fairly simple illustrations, the clean lines of her penmanship are a joy. No mark is made that shouldn't be there and she captures light and texture so well in what can be a difficult medium to work with.
The same can also be said of her writing too, the simple and yet pointed tales are also very poignant. Tove Jansson dearly loved the Moomins, and this comes across in her early scripts. But is interesting to know that she finally became enslaved to them. Although she was an accomplished illustrator and novelist, the public just wanted more Moomin tales until she finally wrote the last of her stories set in their Valley, a story in which they never made an appearance, and as she tired of her creation her brother Lars took up the comic strip, and his work can be see in other volumes.
The Deluxe Edition itself is pretty hefty hardback (although I do think the paperstock could have been a bit thicker, especially as it is a deluxe edition) and it is bound in a primary red paper. On the front Moomin is embossed in a simple design and the look of the volume is quite elegant and understated. Inside the endpapers are the same bright images as the slipcase and a poster of the slipcase art is also included.
There is a brief introduction where there are more enlarged colour works of Moomin and then the comic strips begin. In the back are a number of glossy pages with original character sketches on them. I have to confess that the bright slipcover and introduction do not feel like genuine Tove drawings but more like a pop artist interpreted them. The book would have been perfect if it had used some of her beautiful Moomin paintings, but I can see why they went for the more graphical images rather than watercolour ones. The book is after all about her comic strips, not her paintings. But I do believe that adding some of her other concept art would have really made it the deluxe volume it calls itself. One thing I was very grateful for was the strong well constructed slipcase. Wrapped in printed designs it is beautiful and looks great on a shelf. The stock photo shown by Amazon is not entirely accurate, the case side is narrower than shown and cropped more so that Moomin seems bigger. The spine is also not completely black but has a flower on the bottom of it, the lettering also does not read down the spine, but like a normal book.
All in all I was delighted to receive this book and even at it's full price it is cheaper than the individual volumes and you don't have to worry about sending off of sticky pages to amend your books.
If you are a Moomins fan then it really is a must, lose yourself in the delightful tales of Moominvalley, laugh good-naturedly at their exploits, but beware of the trolls!
Many thanks for reading!
