Product Description

About the Author

Jarvis Cocker has been making music for two-thirds of his life. Two dozen of these years (1978-2002) were spent in Pulp, a group with whom he enjoyed most of the experiences you can have as the singer in a band.

Over this time, Jarvis went from being the quintessential outsider to being one of the most recognised and cherished figures in Britain. He brought a rare, bookish wit to the pop charts, and cut an original dash in a rock'n'roll world often dominated by reductive cliché.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for Pulp fans Jan. 13 2012
By Me - Published on
Format: Hardcover
This is essentially a book of Pulp lyrics, annotated by Jarvis Cocker. That makes it sound trivial, but it's a lovely read. It comes across more like a book of poetry than a lyrics compilation.
The annotations (in the back of the book) are fascinating.
If you're a Pulp fan, I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must for jarvis cocker and pulp fans April 22 2012

Really enjoyed this book. I've always loved the wit and story-telling in Jarvis Cocker's lyrics and this book collects some of the best lyrics with an intro and notes by Cocker. I especially liked the notes and the insight they provide into the context of the lyrics. Easy to navigate on the Kindle as well, though I'll probably buy a physical copy as well to make it easier to flip between the text and notes. I ordered it on the Kindle because I just couldn't make myself wait for a book to arrive! A great collection for a fan or anyone who enjoys superb song-writing.
5.0 out of 5 stars From America Nov. 20 2015

I was the only person in my entire high school who had ever heard a Pulp song. I was hoping that when I graduated and went to college, I'd meet some more... "cultured" people. Unfortunately, it was just some more of the same stuff. I bought this book and began to write bits of each selection on the whiteboard in my English class. After 3 weeks of confusing my classmates, I finally got around to showing them some Pulp songs. And they liked it! They said that they were able to connect to the songs and the lyrics, which I'm not surprised by. Jarvis Cocker's lyrics are down-to-earth and real, just like he is.

All of the lyrics are great although, of course, mostly available elsewhere but the notes at the back are particularly interesting.

3.0 out of 5 stars not impressed with Kindle edition Jan. 1 2013
By Abercrombie Picklehead - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
I assume that the layout of the ebook is the same as that of the paper book. unfortunately, it doesn't work very well this way for Kindle. having the lyrics at the beginning of the book and the notes at the end undoubtedly works beautifully when one can leaf through the book looking for them. however, when you have to go back to the table of contents and select the chapter 'Notes', and then you find that when you try to page forward you are informed that you have finished the book; meaning that you have to jump to the next chapter and then page backwards through the notes, it does not. it is sloppy work on the part of the publisher to release an ebook with such an error - not to mention that the book is clearly not optimised for ease of reading on a Kindle. with that out of the way however, this is a fascinating book. as most of these lyrics are biographical or autobiographical, it is indispensible to have the point of view of the person who wrote them. if you are interested in Jarvis Cocker, I highly recommend this book. just don't get it for your Kindle.
