Review

Nawaz's stories have a huge diversity of voices and perspectives, and are filled with great eloquence and great compassion.--Quill & Quire

From the Back Cover

Mother Superior introduces Saleema Nawaz as a truly bold new voice in fiction. Gorgeous, sensuous prose and edgy, taboo-breaking subject matter combine to create a collection quite unlike anything else being published today.

A prostitute takes shelter with a group of young anarchists. A sister goes missing, mailing a trail of encoded postcards from destinations across the globe. The daughters of a Montreal bagel-shop owner navigate the tricky terrain of being young, Sikh, and female, one growing larger while the other fades. A woman watches with lust and longing as the object of her affections, her pregnant roommate, is pursued by an unsavory suitor. And a precocious child spies on her adoptive mother, trying to grasp the secret of her mother's hidden obsession and of her own unexplained origins.

The seven stories and two novellas in Mother Superior are a heady blend of misfits and mothers, of sisters and complex, mysterious others. Nawaz traces the scars left by family secrets and sings the complex, captivating language of lust and of love.

The stories in this collection take place in Montreal. There are seven stories and two Novellas, titled Mother Superior and The White Dress. The White Dress won the inaugural Robert Kroetsch Award for Best Creative Thesis at the University of Manitoba and Mother Superior has received praise as well.

I love Saleema Nawaz's writing. It is full of energy and it is original. The cast of characters are absorbing and memorable.

In Mother Superior, a wayward young woman lives with her lesbian roommate, who eyes her with lust. She is pregnant and won't get an abortion. She says that she is a slut for Jesus and the story goes on.

My Three Girls has one of the girls seriously ill and she won't take her medication, because she is pregnant. What happens to her and the two girls who happen to be her sisters?

In Bloodlines, a Montreal bagel-shop owner has two daughters, Beena and Sadhana. Their mother is hit while riding her bicycle and dies. A year later, their father dies suddenly. Their uncle moves in and takes over the bagel business and the sisters are left on their own. Beena is growing larger, while Sadhana is keeping a secret. The story is about how the daughters make their way in the community being young, Sikh and female.

In the story titled Sandy, Sandy is found lying on the street bleeding and drunk. She is wearing a red halter top and a miniskirt. The words that come out of her mouth are "I WAS BORN TO DO THIS". She is a three hundred pound prostitute. She is given shelter by a group of rebels.

The cast of characters are a varied group of misfits including mothers, sisters and others who are trying hard to fit into society.

Saleema Nawaz is a new star on the horizon. I love her unique, vibrant and witty style of writing. Her stories will draw you in from beginning to end.

I highly recommend Mother Superior. It merits FIVE STARS.
