He captured the hearts of millions of viewers worldwide. His movie grossed nearly a quarter of a billion dollars worldwide. He's been called the most embarrassing man on the planet. Now the entire Mr. Bean series, the British comic phenomenon created by Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder, Four Weddings and a Funeral), is finally available in one complete package.
Bean, Bean, maniacal nut / The more you watch, you bust a gut! First unleashed in 1989, this sketch series was embraced by PBS viewers in the United States. In the tradition of the great silent clowns, Rowan Atkinson created a character with universal and multi-generational appeal (the sketches have little dialogue and are driven by often ingenious physical comedy). Like Bart Simpson, the resourceful, mischievous, and sometimes malevolent Bean is the inner child incarnate who acts on the impulses polite society normally represses. Atkinson has described Bean as "a 9-year-old boy, with an apparent lack of worldly experience, but an ingenuity that is quite clever in dealing with problems presented to him." These problems include not knowing a single answer on an exam, tactfully disposing of a revolting restaurant meal, changing into his swimsuit at the beach without first removing his pants, and, most hilariously, getting a turkey stuck on his head (a classic bit reprised in the ill-conceived 1997 feature film).
Atkinson has enjoyed some mainstream success stateside. He was the nervous minister ("...your awfully wedded wife") in Four Weddings and a Funeral, and the voice of Zazu in The Lion King. But he mainly enjoys cult status among British comedy aficionados as a founding member of Not the Nine O'Clock News and the star of the Black Adder series. Bean is his crowning creation. In addition to all 14 episodes, this generous boxed set contains previously unaired sketches, Comic Relief appearances, and a segment about Bean's creation, which serves as a nifty introduction for the uninitiated. It also contains a preview for the new Mr. Bean cartoon series. This seems redundant. As this collection hilariously demonstrates, Bean is already animated enough. --Donald Liebenson

We know Mr. Bean quite well as my wife is British, and of course the kids loved him :) So I relented and bought this. The price was good, and the DVD's were good quality. If you are into British style humour you will enjoy these....my wife and kids loved them!!
Shout Factory is putting out a BRAND NEW Re-mastered version of this Box set in March 2015.
And according to Shout Factory, it will include the Missing Scenes that were removed from this older Box set release.
Best part is it's dirt cheap too!
As for the humor, unlike what a previous reviewer has stated, the Mr. Bean character is not entirely silent, he talks more often than is stated but in short sentences and in a strained voice not unlike the character he voiced during a "end-of-the-world cult" sketch in "The Secret Policeman's Other Ball"--if you want a comparison, the style of humor owes much to Chaplin or Keaton, but in a modern setting...
In short, excellent humor but sadly incomplete with no complete set anywhere in site--either stick with your VHS copies or take your chances here...
"We have received numerous emails from viewers like you who believe that our recent release of Mr. Bean: The Whole Bean is missing footage. We discussed these concerns with Rowan Atkinson's team. According to the executive producer of the show, the masters that we received were the official complete versions approved by Rowan Atkinson. The "missing" scenes referred to by fans were extra footage shown on television outside of the United States. We have released this complete series as Rowan Atkinson himself intended it to be viewed."
This still leaves some questions unanswered, such as: since the series is not in fact American at all, how is footage shown "outside of the United States" 'extra,' and not, rather, the original version? However, since they state that the A&E tranfers were approved by Rowan Atkinson, one can only speculate that they can indeed be considered legit; perhaps these are effectively a new cut from the producers of the show. At any rate, my own concerns were largely quashed after reading this, so hopefully this will put things to rest for others as well.
