This is the story of, fifteen year old, John Haney Jr’s life. He lives with his grandparents on a farm in rural Vermont. The setting is the early 70's. The Haney's are simple country folk--farmers, lumberjacks, veterans of Korea and Vietnam, but "simple" is a term used for lifestyle, not human complexity. These are people you will learn to love or dislike, and remember.
Nancy Bowles has lost her beloved brother in the Vietnam War and is inconsolable. She is nineteen and living with her bereaved parents. She feels the need for a change of her circumstance or she may go mad. The recent breakup with her boyfriend adds to her depression. She and her girlfriend have recently befriended an Air Force serviceman, John Haney Sr., who is thirty-three and based in Denver. He asks her to marry him. He is honest with Nancy telling her he needs to be married to get custody of his son from his parents. She believes it is a message from God. The ensuing drama is both disastrous and heart rending.
