Underworld:Awakening(released Jan/12)is the franchise's latest incarnation. It has Kate Beckinsale as Selene, front and center once more(where she belongs),kicking both vampire and lycan butt.Ms.Beckinsale seamlessly pours herself back into her character, both physically and mentally.Starring along with Kate is Stephen Rea as the head of the Antigen lab which Kate becomes prisoner in,Charles Dance as a vampire elder and a good assortment of other supporting cast members.
The film begins with a recap of the first two films which led to the circumstances that this one jumps off from. The human world has now become aware of the lycan/vampire threat and has done major purges to rid itself of these scourges.Selene's lover, hybrid Michael, has fallen into the city river and Kate jumps in after him.The authorities throw in a bomb, which when it detonates, freezes the waters around them, and they are captured. They remain frozen in the Antigen laboratories, the head of which and his son,are both lycans in disguise.Kate, one day,is inexplicably thawed out and escapes the laboratories.
During her flight she runs into another vampire, and also comes across a young girl huddling in the sewers, with lycans in the vicinity. She dispatches the lycans and during their meeting, the young girl explains it was her that unthawed her at the labs,as she was also a test subject, and that she is Selene's daughter and,as it is later learned,a hybrid more powerful than Selene and Michael put together.
Selene and her daughter flee to a local vampire coven where they are not exactly welcomed by its leader. When the place is raided,it is assumed it is humans, but it strangely turns out to be lycans.

What can I say,,, I adore Kate! Sexy and captivating! I have thoroughly enjoyed the previous Underworld movies and had to purchase this one in 3D for my collection! A good story with lots of action, very slick production and awesome visuals! You may not be a fan of this genre but you will probably enjoy this movie, almost as much as I did!..................

Underworld: Awakening is enjoyable for those of us who have watched the other two of the series, or just enjoy action adventure movies. It is interesting in that it has continuity, and takes the viewer to another place, far away from the real-world.

The action is good. Storyline is interesting. The acting is not deep, but it is great for this type of action adventure (I am not really looking for acting intensity, realism or character development).

However, I have to admit that the special effects relating to the werewolves is not very well done. It misses the mark on realism. Up close shots look like plastic, or claymation overlaid on video. This is a substantial detractor - unfortunately. I know this must be ENORMOUSLY difficult to get right - all the more kudos to those movies that do it well.

All told - it was an enjoyable watch. Nice diversion from the real world, email, stress, timelines...
Really I thought it a 2.5 stars... but was generous and gave it a 3 star.

Almost hitting 40 years-old, Kate Beckinsale truly doesn't show it. She looks as if she only started the franchise two or three years ago.

The movie can't feel the same way though. At the end of the second movie, it seemed like vampires were back to human and could face the sun... so unless I'm missing something, there's no way to really know how she became vampire again. Plus, the movie lasts an all too-short 90-some minutes, which makes it look rushed and far lower budgeted than expected.

Special features are nice and contain production featurettes, previews, interviews, deleted scenes and commentary.

In terms of movies, this is, for my taste, the second to last in quality and fun. Although Kate is as beautiful as she ever was and seeing her put on the vinyl suit once more is a true joy and worth watching for that alone.

Considering where the story was heading I thought Underworld Awakening was perfectly laid out as best as it could (for it's genre), the special effects could have been just a tad craftier, and the ending could have had more thought put into it - but thanks to Kate Beckinsale's continuing performance as Selene; you start to forget the little flaws it had here and there. Not to mention I may be a bit bias since I have always been a Kate Beckinsale fan! Her acting is as flawless as her beauty. Chalk up a five star in my books (ya ok, so I'm being just a tiddle bit bias, at least I'm being honest lol). Truth be told, I will admit that it did sculpt the expectations that I had for Underworld's continuing saga (for the most part).

Definitely the best movie of the lot. Three tries over almost ten years (she was not in "Rise of the Lycans") Kate Beckinsale finally lives up to her potential to become the most iconic, the most stylized female vampire in film history. Selene is awesome! You wouldn't doubt for a moment her six hundred years of experience, fighting Lycans, humans and fellow vampires. She has seen it all and done it all yet still retains a sense of integrity and an aura of nobility. She claims, "I'm a fighter, not a leader." But in her world who else is left, who better than Selene to take on the mantle of saviour for the dwindling and dying vampire covens? I look forward to the fifth instalment.
