This movie is a must have, and a pleasure to see on DVD. Nearly 20 years later, it remains the best made-for-tv movie ever, with an incredible cast. Ronny Cox is as consistent as ever, with David Soul as the everyday guy with a mean streak also very good. But the most chilling and menacing performance belongs to Michael Gross, who puts this movie from being very good to being great. Just, and I mean just, finished up with his portrayal of nice guy Steven Keaton in the hit TV show Family Ties (where is ths on DVD???), Mr. Gross did an abrupt 180 with this unforgettable portrayal of a ruthless and ultra violent robber who is seemingly a normal man (along with neighbour David Soul). From wives and bbq's on the weekends, to weekdays of brutal violence and robbery. And it works - I don't think Ward Cleaver could have successfully made this jump, but the Mr. Cleaver of the 80's does. And does it chillingly well. Fantastic job Michael Gross, as well as the producers for going well beyond the simple made-for-tv formula, and accurately portraying the true story right to its bloody, violent climax. If you're looking for the typical good guys always live and win, then stay away from here. If you are a fan of true crime, or just intrigued, then try this movie. I haven't forgot it in 18 years.

I recently watched this again, for the first time in about 20 years. This movie shows that you don't need a big budget to make a really good movie. It's a little creaky in its flow sometimes, but the strength of the story and performances holds it together well. The actors playing the good guys are all excellent, and the two playing the bad guys (Gross and Soul) are startling and superb. Gross is more quietly creepy, and Soul boldly creepy. Once the movie gets rolling, you're afraid every time either of these guys is with *anybody.* The violence spread throughout is not gory, but it's certainly brutal. If anything, the lack of gore heightens the sense of coldness about the two bad guys. The final shootout is stark, eerie (especially regarding Soul's character), and very sad.

From other reading, I understand that the events in this movie, including the details, deaths, and injuries in the final shootout, are quite accurate. The real events were more spread out in time than I felt watching the movie, but I think that was for the better.

I cared about the FBI guys, even though, with a true ensemble cast, we see each of them only a little. That's a serious testament to the movie's craft and performances.

I remember seeing this movie on t.v. many years ago and it caught my attention at that time, mainly because of the true crime aspect and the significance of what transpired, especially for the FBI(One might say this 1986 incident is somewhat comparable to the more recent North Hollywood shootout in February, 1997 involving the LAPD). "In the Line of Duty" held my attention because of the coherent script and excellent acting. Michael Gross does an amazing job as one of the two villains, stepping away from his best-known role as a friendly father figure on Family Ties. I appreciated the brief update at the end of the film describing what happened to the main characters...a must-include for those interested in true crime.
