I like the large screen and ability to calculate relevant calculations. Using it does require (not a big deal and this would be the same for all other plug in meters) a plugging it into a short extenstion cord to read the screen. The screen is readable close-up and much easier to read when the short duration green backlight is on. The backlight is normally off to save on button battery power it uses.
It is a usable tool but there are 3 things that could be improved: 1) adding a 3rd electricity rate to meter -- thereby leaving it working for the weekdays when there are usually 3 rates per weekday; 2) making it easier to program and 3) should number (1) not be possible to do, then adding a 'reset' function that DOES NOT automatically shut off the appliance currently plugged into it. Currently the reset button clears everything and switches off the item. An improved 'reset' would only reset the rate function and not the time, nor would it shut off the thing plugged into it. 4) the 'GHG - green house gas' meter is cute but not practical since who the heck knows what kind of value to give anyway? The timer and countdown modes are in my opinion superfluous.
Conclusion: Its a usable item but really only to measure one electrity rate at a time. Programming takes patience and perseverance, and its much cheaper than the 'kill-a-watt' unit. Note: when monitoring your fridge, it will swich off your fridge when the compressor starts up due to the natual spike in amperage that happens in all fridges. But you can still get the wattage value from the fridge after the compressor starts up. Also, it can give you a wattage reading of below 1 watt such as cordless phone chargers, it just will change/flicker values fast as you watch it.
