HASH(0x9d9e0a44) out of 5 stars Excellent read July 14 2011

I read this short story based on the recommendation of a friend. I am a history buff, but I have mainly focused on the Holocaust when reading European History. Neighbors, however whet my appetite for more! The ending was a great surprise; the author introduced the protagonist, developed the story and surprised us in the ending with confidence! Only one question was left unanswered in my opinion. When is your next work going to be out? Thank you for a great read!

HASH(0x9db09168) out of 5 stars Great Short Story July 11 2011
By Richard J Carroll - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
This short story takes place in 1946 Moscow. The main character is a lonely 83 year old woman who lives in an old communal apartment. For one who knows little about post World War II Russia, this story is a good introduction. The added ingredients of mystery and suspense, make this story compelling and enjoyable.
This is a god read - try it - you'll like it.

HASH(0x9f72b588) out of 5 stars Excellent short story in 1946 Moscow Dec 30 2011

I really loved this dark, historical tale of a post WWII group of people living in an apartment in Moscow in 1946. Jobs are hard to come by and food is even more scarce. Eighty-three-year-old Anisya is the center of the group living in the apartment where eight people now live. As she lies awake at night, she listens to the screams coming from other apartments in the building as members of the MGB break their way into people's homes, taking them away into the darkness.

"Neighbors" is a very engrossing story and one that really pulled me into the lives of the characters and what was happening to them. There is suspense and intrigue and quite a twist at the end. Like other reviewers, I would like to read more by this author since I enjoyed this story so much. A highly recommended short story.

HASH(0x9df526f0) out of 5 stars Tight, with a twist May 20 2012

This is a tight and well-formulated short story with a significant twist at the end. The story focuses on a group of neighbors who live crowded together in an apartment in the Soviet Union. Slowly the police have been arriving to arrest the building's residents. We see the action through the eyes of an elderly woman who is tired, of communism and the privations it has brought.

I really enjoyed this story, and I quickly became invested in the lives of the characters. This is most definitely a *short* story, and I think there was some room for the author to make it a bit longer.

HASH(0x9dbd0204) out of 5 stars Gripping July 21 2011

As I started to read this, I was transported immediately to a time familiar from many films I may have seen along the way, about the more brutal side of life in the former USSR. About distrust and insecurity.
I was held to the story wanting to reach it's conclusion, and with a twist and totally unexpected ending I have to say that this short story -I hope- is just a fraction of what this author will offer in the future.
