Two issues I have with these omnibus editions: they are a bit too heavy to hold with two hands and sometimes you have to tilt your head to read the text close to the spine. I think it would have been a lot better if they were in 2-in-1 instead of 3 but other that that I think they are still worth it.
The basic premise revolves around Shinji Ikari, a 14-year-old boy who's suddenly swept into a world that's nearing its end--a world that he must help defend from these alien-like creatures called Angels. Unluckily for Shinji, at the moment he's the only pilot for a giant mech robot that humanity can rely on, and he just happens to have a few(?) problems of his own.
One thing I really liked, aside from the other things I really liked, was that Shinji wasn't as much of a spineless, unlikeable wimp like he is in the series. He's actually pretty likeable in the manga. What always fascinated me about Evangelion was that one of its main focuses was the psychological effects that battling these fearsome angels in giant robots had on the teenage pilots. What made it even more fascinating was the fact that they weren't exactly 'hinged' to begin with.
All in all, a great start to the manga adaptation of the legendary TV series.
**** out of *****
My only complaint about this product was the cover binding. It came loose at the spine rather quickly. This is not a deal breaker for me (I will be buying the rest of the 3 in 1s) but if you like to display your books you may want to go with a different format.
Not only we can get the rare volumes that are out of print and very expensive to buy, but they also did a good job. They opted to keep the original Japanese art by not translating the "special effects" like Boom! Bang! Kaboom! Vrooooom! Instead the added a glossary at the end referring to that. I really like it. The art is untouched that way. If you are a fan, you need these in your collection.
Definitely worth buying if you've already tore through the anime and Rebuild films and still want more!
