Paul McCartney is a wizard in music production. He really rocked with the Beatles, and he has a real mastery of pop music, as evidenced by his solo career. I believe that good pop music can be light and airy, but have complex textures and sounds at the same time. The lyrics should be catchy and rhymy, but should also be rewarding after several listens. There's a lot of forgettable, but profitable, pop music being made these days. This album demonstrates how to make proper pop music.

Remember Paul's solo career and Wings? We saw exquisite musical productions that were so fun to listen to and don't show their age today. On the lyrical front, however, these songs suffered. "Gonna do you sweet banana", "C Moon is she" or "Someone's knocking at the door... open the door and let'em in" over and over again...

So longtime Macca fans have been waiting a few years for new material. The man is getting older, and maybe he would get lazy or just miss the mark on this one. But when the single "New" dropped, all worries were reassured. New is a proper pop song - buoyant and colorful, with clever arrangements and the signature timeless McCartney sound. Only this time around, we're in 2013 and it shows. It's new! And it's excellent.

On first listen, it's clear that NEW works as an entire album for the most part. A few songs stand out, but there's nothing that grabs your attention, that you would go back to over and over again exclusively (except of course for the hit single). The style is unmistakably pop, but he's not trying for the Top 40. He's simply writing songs from the heart, with nothing to prove. On second listen, you begin to listen to the lyrics. "Alligator" is interesting, could it be about a woman? Ooh "Queenie Eye", that's a catchy one.

FYI: I am 40 years, grew up with my parents playing the Beatles and I have later followed McCartney's solo career. Should I also point out that I have a collection of CD from Enya to Metallica? Anyway!

I have to repeat the title: I can't believe how great this one is. I am tempted to write it's "surprisingly" good. I have liked most of McCa's solo stuff, but there were always a couple of songs in some albums that weren't so....(you get me), but on this one they are all good. This album is not just good, it's GREAT! My 70 year old Dad loves it too and my 7 year old son loves it as much as we do.

My only regret about McCartney is that he doen't play enough of his solo stuff in concert. I know, most people want to hear the Beatles and Wings' hits, but I wish he would do a special concert called "The Solo years" or something, because about 5 songs on NEW would be great to hear live and not only the title track.

Enjoy ( I know you will)

First off, let me just say that I love this album. I bought the Deluxe Edition AND the Collector's Edition from iTunes, I bought the vinyl from Amazon and the vinyl came with a download card for the standard edition. I tell you this so you know that I really love this album. My review is going to focus strictly on the vinyl pressing I purchased from Amazon, however.
The set is beautiful. It's in a gatefold packaging with two pockets: one holds an absolutely stunning and beautiful FULL-SIZE booklet with notes from Paul and the rest of the crew, as well as accompanying photographs of the group. The other pocket holds the vinyl, encased in a beautiful slipcase to keep it preserved. The sound on the vinyl is exceptional and top-notch, and it's one of the few records I could play on repeat all day long.
It's a great quality pressing, as you would expect from someone as anticipated and well-known as McCartney, who himself said that vinyl is the "most sophisticated" way to listen to music. I agree, and Paul doesn't disappoint.

This will be yet another overlooked classic in Paul McCartney's brilliant late career renaissance that started back in 1997 with Flaming Pie. It's a shame because every tune on this disc is a winner. A lot of interesting sounds, instruments and song structures are used here too. It would best be described as "prog-pop".

Who would have thought that 50 years after the Beatles debut, Please Please Me, Paul McCartney would make what is almost certainly his best album? No, his voice is not what it was with the Beatles, Wings, or even solid solo efforts like Flaming Pie, but it’s good enough to help make New an absolute knockout. This record is possibly better than a third of the Beatles records and should be a contender for top 100 best albums ever made. Yes, it’s that calibre of good. Well done, Paul. Wondering what the next one will be like.

This is a great CD. Lots of new songs and unmistakenly Paul McCartney. Amazing that he can still sound like this after so many years.
