Your DSLR’s best friend
A must-have for standard portraits and everyday use, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G is a lens that will absolutely surprise you. The 50mm focal length (75mm equivalent on DX format cameras) with a fast f/1.8 aperture allows you to capture stunning images with a shallow depth-of-field, letting your subjects stand out from their backgrounds. The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G may soon become your new favorite lens.
Brilliance In Any Light Get astonishing low light results
This lightweight standard lens is a great travel companion because you never know when a beautiful, sunny day will turn cloudy and rainy. With its fast f/1.8 aperture, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G will capture even low-light situations with stunning brilliance.
Beautiful Background Blur Achieve more natural depth of field
Whether you're shooting portraits, food or nature—indoors or outdoors—the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings. And its 50mm focal length is perfect for creating natural perspective in your photographs.
Capture Every Detail Shoot tack-sharp portraits every time
Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare, while the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G's Aspherical Lens Element (AS) virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberrations, even when shooting at the widest available aperture. Pair that with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, accurate and quiet autofocus, and you can be sure all of your portraits will be tack sharp.

The large aperture allows for some incredibly soft bokeh, as well as decent low-light performance. Don't let the Micro designation trick you into thinking this is a one trick pony...this lens can be used for close-up work, portraits, insects, wild life, etc. The auto focus worked well, but was noisy and sometimes slow to recognize that something was within macro range. Keep in mind that this is a prime lens, meaning it is fixed at 105mm. For me, using a Prime lens has taught me to "zoom with my feet"; I am constantly moving around and checking out different perspectives and compositions. This may seem like a drawback to some, but I have never had so much fun taking photos.
The lens is fairly straightforward to use. There is a VR switch (Vibration Reduction, gets you one or two more stops when taking handheld photos...turn this off when using a tripod),a focus distance switch (if you aren't doing close-up macro work, switch this to 0.5 to Inf), and an auto/manual focus switch. Focal length is display right on the barrel. Included with the lens is a detailed instruction book, a soft case, a front and rear lens cap, and a hood (Pro Tip: Use this if you want people to think you mean business!)
I've included a few photos that I have taken with this lens on my NIKON D3200. Enjoy!
What is inside?:
In the package there's a Lens + caps, the lens hood and a good carrying bag. (same ones they sell on the European market which is great)
it also comes with a user manual and a warranty card by Nikon.
Review in few words:
Great prime FX lens, I am using it with my D3400 (crop censor so it will be 75mm). The 1.8 aperture is wonderful for smooth bokeh and low light photography. This lens if used on a crop censor will do a great job for portraits.
The focus is fast enough, but will struggle a bit in low light, so use the manual focus to help it.
Glad that I did a quick google again before I placed my order for f1.4G and found f/1.8G does the same job but for almost half the price.
Bottom line: GREAT PRICE for close shots especially portraits - I use the lens mostly for my dog's instagram.
Compatible on NIKON DLSR, I use it on D5000 and D7000.
For copy work, this is a spectacular lens. And I've been satisfied with images created at distance, as well. The only observation I would make is that if you intend to regularly photograph very small objects - gems, postage stamps, and the like - you may find that the lens is so physically close to the work as to make lighting difficult. A ring flash (a special flash that clips to the end of the camera lens, and wraps around it in a ring) would solve this problem; or you may want to select a different macro lens, with a longer focal length.
To sum up - this is a magnificent lens, and I can highly recommend it to anyone interested in producing extremely crisp, accurate reproduction of flat copy. Worth every penny. >Charlie
