Online modes have a lasting appeal, but some may find this game lacking a lot of replay value if you're not into getting competitive online. It does make for a great local multiplayer game for friends and parties with 2 to 4 player modes available.
At first I was not excited for this game. It seemed like a glorified "Punch Out" rehash. I tried the online "global testpunch" demo and I was hooked after the first match. This game feels really good! Maybe because of the third person camera, looking at footage of somebody else playing does not do justice to the gameplay. Like Smash Bros, you can play this game at casual level and mash button and have a good time. However, take some time to learn the mechanics of the game and you will easily outwit and beat online spammers that play like predictable flowcharts. Like in all fighting games, you have rock paper scisors type decisions: throws beat blocking, but single blows beat throws.
And this feels really good! There is a lot of gameplay variety with the possible combinations of characters and loadouts. The former offering different mouvement and defense options and the later giving attack paterns and abilities. For example, Springman with electric arms can parry hits and shock oponents and Twintele with ice arms can double jump and burn up oponents.
This game has a lot of content and different game modes. Arms can be enjoyed in any control schemes. Surprisingly, even the motion controls are well calibrated. But since I mostly play in handheld mode, I concentrate on the more traditional control scheme.
Arms feels really polished with lots of quality of life features, you can play practice mode while waiting for the next match and the interface is clean. The online experience is as good as any other modern game.
This might just be the next Splatoon.
