Firstly, the joy-cons must be attached to the console to charge - the grip included is not the charging grip, which much be purchased separately, as well as any docking stations.
Secondly, additional Joy-cons are $100.00 CAD pre-tax - this is an absurd amount for just the controllers.
Lastly, the on-board software is extremely bare-bones. This is understandable because it's an early version but w/o any media channel support, not even basic applications like YouTube or a Web-Browser makes it extremely questionable in terms of support. It's game line-up is also very weak with bleak outlooks.
Despite all that, the build quality as well as the seamless transition from the television to handheld is such a well done experience. It does exactly what it was intended to do - a home console that can be transported on a whim and multiplayer can be experienced anywhere, but the expensive peripherals, the weak library and support for 3rd party apps makes it untenable as a 5-star product.
I have to say that the actual console itself is great and well worth the price tag. It 100% lives up to the promises that the commercials and advertising make. Switching from handheld to docked and vice versa is seamless in a way that I didn't really think it would be. When using it handheld it has a good weight to it and feels solid. The tablet screen is just small enough so that the 720p output looks great and just big enough so that everything is legible. I guess every game will handle the image/text sizing differently, but considering the image on the TV screen is the exact same as the image displayed on the tablet, I am impressed that on the TV it doesn't seem too big or on the tablet it doesn't seem too small. (To be fair I have only played Breath of the Wild so it doesn't surprise me that the Nintendo team nailed it.) There is a little bit of choppiness when docked if there is a lot happening on screen, but I probably wouldn't really have noticed if not for other reviews pointing it out.
As I mentioned before, I have been looking forward to playing many of the Nintendo games I missed over the years, and the Switch will be a great console to do that on, but without the Virtual Console this is currently not an option. The number of games available at launch (both physical and downloadable) is actually better than most people give Nintendo credit for, but the amount of games that already live in VC on other Nintendo systems would have made this an easy purchase for people like me.
All in all, I think this is a great console with a whole bunch of potential. I couldn't wait for the new Zelda so that was the main catalyst for me purchasing the Switch. You may run out of games to play if you buy at this point, but that's the same for any new console so that should be expected. I'm confident that VC will eventually make its way on the Switch in some form or another, so overall I'm very happy with my choice.
