The Wii U, introduced by Nintendo, is the latest HD console to hit the gaming market. Like many, I was a little apprehensive about purchasing this new hardware as some individuals expressed dissatisfaction towards the product; however, after owning the console for more than a week, I can safely say that it has exceeded my expectations on every level.
The Wii U is great as one can play a game, for example Mario U, on either the T.V. screen or the 6 inch screen gaming tablet (included) thus effectively removing the dependance of playing on the big screen. The latter allows your family members to watch their favorite T.V. show or movie on the T.V. screen while independently playing on the gaming tablet. Simply put, this feature comes very handy.
Furthermore, the console boasts 1080p graphics, an online community (Miiverse) where one can interact with fellow gamers around the world about their favorite games, a streaming application called TVii (coming late December release) for active users of Netflix and an Internet Browser.
Effectively, I can see this console being my main gaming hub and much more. Furthermore, all Wii games and remotes will be compatible with this new version. Hence, I am very content with my purchase and expect many great things from Nintendo - this console has a lot of potential.
P.S. If this purchase is for your kid for Christmas, please do yourself a favor and plug the machine prior to Christmas as there is a mandatory update to be downloaded. It would be a travesty to have to wait 1 hour to play during Christmas before playing.

Don't listen to the Nintendo haters; now that Nintendo is actually putting out some actual games for the system, the Wii U is definitely worth the purchase. Pikmin 3 and EarthBound (yes, they FINALLY released EarthBound for Virtual Console!!!) are reasons ALONE to own a Wii U. I'm highly impressed with the whole Gamepad thing; it's far more fun than I thought it would be, especially with multiplayer (I hope they do more Nintendo Land style things, because that was WAY more fun than "Wii Play" ever was, lol).
I don't know, you can brag about all the "features" and "multiplayer-ness" that the other consoles have all you want, but let's be honest, is online multiplayer really that big a deal anymore? It's all the same to me; jerks who yell at you from across the world for not being good at the game, or for being better at them at the game. I much prefer this simple, fun system that I can sit down and play with my girlfriend and just have an absolute blast with. And again, any online, third party crap that I want to play, I have or can get on Steam. Why would you ever want to play a generic crappy shooter game on a Nintendo console anyway? Bring back Jet Force Gemini and then we'll talk, but otherwise...
Anyway, all arguments aside, I'm satisfied with my purchase and I highly reccomend a Wii U to anyone who loves gaming for what gaming was originally meant for; fun. It's an escape from reality, something to RELIEVE your stress, not add to it.

I prefer the Wii Virtual console (should be how they play wii, rather than Wii Menu), Netflix channel is better on the Wii in the GUI area. The system is very awesome, with incredible features, you can run the game and TV. It's better than anything out there now. Still uses removable media. Annoying it won't search for your ethernet, but even wireless, updates don't take that long. A good download manager. Basic is worth much less than the difference in cost. Nintendo Land is a good amusement, especially for getting use to the system quickly.
I hate all the DLC in this world and some things actually don't annoy you with endless mods and crap for extra cost still. I mean, add it to the sequel and I'll get a disk.

I waited to buy this system because I didn't really care for the wii accept for Tennis games, but have decided to purchase this a few days ago and am LOVING IT!!!!! Very easy to set up and to play. The remote is much easier to hold and use than I thought it would be. I decided to buy this system after all because there are many games that I love to play with the wii U like Mario, Luigi and soon to come Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Sonic, Mario 3D and Mario Kart 8.... Can't wait for the new games to come out!!!! :)

Bough this a an upgrade to the Original Wii. Ours was failing, so it prompted the upgrade. I'm very happy that it plays all the original Wii Games. However, the new format (Wiimote vs.Gamepad , Wii Menu vs. WiiU menu seems a bit more confusing than necessary. Not much advantage of the new system for Gameplay, or impressibe titles.
Wishing I has waited for the price drop that will inevitably come when competitor's consoles arrive.

Wii U is simply a gift that keeps on giving! It is a major improvement from the Wii we purchased 3 years ago, and Nintendo Land is sooo fun to play--I am talking about us in our 50s hehe!!!
The Hi-Def visuals are awesome, the game pad is very responsive!
The only downside is the internet connection takes a lot of time to set up--they assumed everybody has a broadband Wifi (expensive BUT fast)...we only have a 25 mbps wifi, though!
All in all an excellent console, gamepad and gaming experience!
HIGHLY recommended!

Ah the Wii U. How underrated you are. I know what most are going to say: the Wii U is dead, you should get the Switch. Though we'll detail that in a bit. Let's first talk about the console itself.
The Wii U is Nintendo's first HD console, so if you're the kind who needs that HD, you finally got it here; (though graphical quality in games never bothered me much). The Wii U also supports traditional composite output, so whether you have an HD tv, or an older one, this console will work on it. It can even work on a dvd player with comppsite plugs or on a laptop or pc through a capture card.
The system is home to a gaint hoat of games. While I'd argue Nintendo is still more on the expensive side compared to other consoles (say, the ps3) when it comes to ir's games, there's good reason for it. Most of their games are top notch. On top of the quality of the games, you have a vast host of them to play, as not only do you have Wii U games you can play, you also have the E Shop, which is host to many Virtual Console titles of the N64, NES, SNES, GBA, DS, and a few selects from the Wii (which can be cheaper then buying the original Wii disks). There's also indie games if that's your thing.
On top of all of that, it has the Wii built into it, so you can play all of your Wii games on it from the disk through the Wii Menu. Which of course opens even more options. The best part involving this, is you can display all Wii games on the gamepad and tv, allowing you to play on just the gamepad with your tv off on ANY Wii title if you so choose, even splitscreen, and with the gamepad sporting it's own sensor bar (essentially making it a psuedo Switch).
Though I can hear many of you now: this is all well and good but we already kbow this stuff and why buy this when we can get Switch? Well, while admittedly many games from Wii U have been ported to the Switch, and while it's POSSIBLE that the FREE online multiplayer capabilities of the Wii U COULD get shut down, there aren't too many online Wii U titles that support online as it is, and the console is still a good buy in it's own right depending on what you're looking for.
Even if free online mulriplayer and even if (as unlikely as it is) the E Shop on Wii U both cease and absolutely all support for this console dies out, I'd still say it's worth purchasing.
Not only can you (currently) get most of the Switch's games on Wii U (cuz they're Wii U ports), there are some experiences you can only experience on the Wii U you won't get on Switch. On top of that, off-TV play is supported in a lot of games allowing you to play on the gamepad itself, games that support 2 player without the need to split the screen, Mario Maker and Splatoon can still be enjoyed even IF Nintendo shuts all support down; (albeit Splatoon will be limitedto Sinfle Player Campaign, Amiibo challenges, and Battle Dojo, and Mario Mario would be limited to creating levels yourself or playing the built in levels, bith would still be enjoyable), as every other Wii game would, you can watch youtube, crunchyroll, and browse the internet; all in all, the system isn't nearly as bad as everyone claims it is, and is cheaper then Switch with even more retro experiences then Switch has so far.
In regards to people who say to get a Switch rather then a Wii U, for the price of the Switch ($300), I got this Wii U console from Amazon Warehouse, an ethernet adaptor for it, and many games, whereas if i were to have instead gotten Switch, I'd have only had 1 game, and that's assuming I had an extra $60 on top of the original $300.
While this console may be 'dead', as many say, so too are the Playstation 2, Sega Genesis, and Nintendo 64, yet you don't see people bashing those as they do the Wii U, do you? The Wii U is a fantastic console, in spite of it's failure from a marketing standpoint, and I'd recommended it to anyone looking for a versitile local multiplayer console with a large game library.

Arrived locked behind parental controls, persistent gamepad connection issues. What a letdown.
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 15, 2020Verified Purchase
Arrived with a parental control lock PIN preventing me from doing anything. I was lucky enough to find a utility to find out the master code to bypass this, but most would not. System was not formatted and had random stuff from prior user - generally you expect these things wiped.
The game pad, said to work at 26 feet under average conditions with reviews saying up to 80-100 under perfect conditions, disconnects when more than 3 feet away. Trying to play from my bed, literally 6 feet from the console, is impossible as the game pad is constantly disconnecting with error prompts interrupting.
The Game Pad has a "refurbished by GameStop" sticker on the back. They didn't do a good job - and, coincidentally, as somebody that worked for GameStop for 4 years I can attest to the fact that their "refurbished" hardware was constantly returned due to issues. The unit was listed as used in good condition - while I'm sure it's not violating any rules to do so, I do not expect that to mean the unit was broken and fixed by a third party. If it has been broken and fixed by somebody other than the manufacturer it would be nice for that to appear in the listing; used is one thing, that's fine, but fixed by some random GameStop technician because it had stopped working is a bit beyond that.
I'm still not sure what to do with it, I do enjoy playing and have wanted one for a while but am forced to sit on the floor directly in front of my TV in order to do so, unless I play with a controller other than the gamepad which kind of defeats the entire purpose of having the system.
So yeah, I haven't decided if I should return it or try to figure out a way to swap out the gamepad alone, but I'll probably have to return the entire thing, meaning I get to experience the joy of return shipping, waiting for a refund to post, finding another unit to buy, and waiting for that one to arrive.
I cannot imagine this was tested by the seller beforehand, as simply powering it on would have shown it was locked behind parental controls and that the gamepad had serious issues. Or, if it was tested, it was sold knowing there were significant problems without stating as such. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt and assuming they just sold it without checking it out, which is the lesser of two evils, but still a massive disappointment.
I just wanted to play Zelda, man. It shouldn't be this complicated.
Edit: It's been a while but I wanted to add that I bought a new wireless/bluetooth module replacement for the gamepad and installed it. The average person should be able to do so if they take their time and follow instructions - it also requires a specific tool but it's only a few bucks. After doing this I can now play from across the house, which is what was intended. So it's working great now, but only after I bought additional hardware and performed a repair myself. The original review stands - this arrived in poor condition and was not the expected quality - but if you put in some work and a bit more money you can at least fix gamepad issues.
