This book was assigned for an intro graphics design course I'm taking, and it is an excellent choice. The basic design principles are boiled down to easy to understand morsels. And everyyhing is well-presented as you would expect in a graphics design book. Recommended if you are just interested in design and for self-study.

The single best introduction to the elements of design I've read. The latest edition adds 100 pages to the original, with much more on type and typography than previously. It covers the basics clearly and succinctly with both text and illustrations.

No, it won't turn you into a graphic designer, but it will point out how the elements work together, how content flows and what impact even small items can have on the overall product. Williams' style is light, fun and easy to read.

This is the book that non-designers need to have on their desktop when making design decisions. But even experienced designers can benefit from being reminded of the core elements, just like writers need to read Strunk and White periodically.

This is the sort of book you want to have if you don't know much about design, and are always amazed at how some people create pagemaking, signs, and other displays that simply look good. Most of the book is structured with a "before/after" view to allow you to compare the concept the authors explains. It is filled with examples. This is not a particularly academic book, it is a very pragmatic, to the point book.
