"Nostalgia" is Annie Lennox's third album of covers, if you count her collection of Christmas songs released a few years ago. It's easily the best of the lot; whereas "Medusa" was patchy and tentative, "Nostalgia" is cohesive and beautifully arranged, with Annie's voice and the songs' timeless melodies and lyrics firmly set at the center. Best of all, the weird vibrato that marred some songs on "Christmas Cornucopia", is gone; and even though Annie's voice has deepened with time and isn't exactly the fluid instrument it once was, you can feel how deeply connected to this material she is and some of her finest vocals performances are arguably found on "Nostalgia". The clear highlights here are clearly "You belong to me" and "September in the rain", but there are many other standouts such as "Summertime", the poignant "Strange fruit", "God bless the child", "The nearness of you", "I cover the waterfront" and "I can dream, can't I ?". This is the sort of quiet, jazzy music that will take you back to an era where music was done by actual musicians and singers, and when a song's lyrics were meaningful; and although one can't help but wish that Annie Lennox released an album of self-penned originals, "Nostalgia" is a reminder of how formidable an interpret she can be.

Don’t expect Christina Aguilera type energy because Annie takes it slow. Lush, poignant and so moving! I simply cannot stop listening to this. She sings with maturity and confidence, and her voice is incredibly well-suited for this genre of music.

As the vintage intro to “Memphis In June” suggests, Annie will be taking you on a different sort of trip this time. The nostalgic mood she evokes has a fresh, understated delivery. Her voice is perfect for the chorus of “Georgia on my mind” and she doesn’t rush here as she tenderly meanders through the song.

I wasn’t initially taken with “I Put A Spell On You,” but after an few listens, I love the energy it injects into the CD. Annie’s vocals are so bold and the musicians do a great job building up the song. It’s also a nice change in tempo and tone compared to the preceding songs.

“Summertime” is nothing short of magical. In this lullaby, you can almost imagine her gently rocking a baby as she slowly spoon-feeds us each delicious verse. It’s quite beautiful!

There are standout tracks like “I Cover the Waterfront” and “September in the Rain” which took me by surprise! Annie’s soothing take on “I Cover the Waterfront” transports you to a different era, and the brass accompaniment is a nice touch! The piano keys in “September in the Rain” sprinkle like raindrops and Annie’s vocals are lush. Both songs are subtle and perfectly executed.

“You Belong to Me” is easily the most nostalgic piece for me. I remember Patti Page singing this when I was a child. In Annie’s rendition, the vocals are pure, the melody is pretty, and the song simply moves me. The self-professed Queen-of-Doom sounds happy and “in love” (if not a little co-dependent).

I've always liked Annie Lennox, but this CD blew me away. She really has the chops for this stuff. So clean and pure. She presents the songs so that they truly mean something. If you are in the 'baying at the moon' singers camp, this is probably not for you, but if you believe that Peggy Lee, Connie Boswell, Billie Holiday knew what they were doing, then you'll welcome this CD by Annie Lennox.

I'm a fan so I think Annie can do no wrong. In general, the album is mesmerizing. Annie's voice is warm and emotional. There are several tracks that will blow you away: Georgia On My Mind I Put a Spell on You, even Strange Fruit, however, some of the ballads seem a little timid or tepid ... not words I would usually apply to Annie Lennox's work. I wish she had felt free enough to express the sheer joy of singing that you hear in the last track, Mood Indigo, across the whole album.

Honestly, her rendition of You Belong To Me is worth the price of the album. As with many other listeners, it is my favourite track.

Note to Lennox fans: this is a mellow album. It's soothing. It's calming. It's emotional. It's rainy-day beauty in music. And the timbre of her voice brings a unique touch to each & every song on this album. She has that low, mature resonance that just gives me shivers.

Highlights: You Belong To Me, Georgia On My Mind, Summertime (I have never liked this song until this version).

Never knew it before seeing an excerpt of her singing on Charlie Rose but Annie is also a great blues and jazz singer and I just had to get this album - the fidelity is awesome and I particularly like Georgia on my mind and Mood Indigo on this CD and " I put a spell on you" which is also on the DVD - only downer is that the DVD only has that one song on it but the DVD was a bonus anyway.

The CD is wonderful. It has a great selection of songs. The DVD was a bit disappointing. I was looking for more of a concert content. I would recommend just buying the CD and skip the combo pack.
