On June 1, 2009, Air France Flight 447 fell out of the night sky over the Atlantic Ocean killing all 216 passengers and 12 crew members on board. In this program "Nova: Crash of Flight 447" broadcast on PBS on February 16, 2011, investigators piece together available weather and radar data as well as automatic electronic messages from the airplane transmitted through the airwave, in an effort to reconstruct the tragic event and the possible cause of the crash. It is an aviation detective story. I found the program riveting.

SYNOPSIS - The crew of Flight 447, with the limited range of the on-board weather radar, apparently flew the airplane into a severe thunderstorm over the Altantic Ocean at 35,000 feet, unable to detect it visually in the pitch darkness of the night. Then the three Thales pitot tubes of the air-speed indicator froze up when the airplane encountered super-cooled water droplets at high altitude, which totally overwhelmed the heaters of the tubes. Without reliable airspeed data, the automatic controls of the highly computerized Airbus A330-200 aircraft shut down one by one in rapid successions. The crew was forced to fly the airplane manually. Standard procedure in the event of an air speed indicator failure is to set the engine thrust at 85% and adjust the pitch of the airplane up 5 degrees. The show suggests that the crew was simply overwhelmed by the event and failed to do so, the plane stalled, and fell into the Atlantic Ocean killing everybody on board. It hints that pilots of modern highly computerized airliners are simply not trained adequately to react to emergencies which require skilled manual control of the aircraft.

Compared to Miracle on the Hudson, I would say that it doesn't measure up to it.
Lots of talking about the crash, and not to many actual events that led up to the crash were shown.
Miracle on the Hudson was 100% better.

An interim report confirms that the pilots had not applied the standard unreliable airspeed procedure. It paints a picture of an aircrew overwhelmed by inconsistent data and warning signals and failed to control the aircraft.

We have entered the third millennium, and, given all our scientific, engineering, and technical advancements concerning flight over the last 100 odd years, one might naturally be led to the conclusion that we have conquered air and space, and it is therefore wholly safe, or very nearly so. Perhaps so; but it may simply not be the case that we can relax, so to speak, and depend on our remarkably advanced technology and instrumentation, as this excellent documentary reveals. It admits of degrees, of course. However, as witnessed in this Nova special of an unusual 2009 air crash over the Atlantic, laxity can, and still is, an issue; and given that this plane never malfunctioned, nor was there any unusual weather phenomenon, this was a disaster that really should never have happened.

As with the Titanic of a century ago, complacency still is a problem that persists, and it does not have much of anything to do with technology, advanced, or otherwise. Watching this, we are led to ask: How can a simple, and as well known, phenomenon as thunderstorms bring down a 21st century jet? There are thunderstorms, in some way or manner, over the Earth, at all times. Yet is it all so simple as we may be led to believe? This documentary reveals the scientific edge of this disaster: of what most probably happened to Flight 447, and, in an outstanding, evenhanded, and incisive investigation, we are led to some surprising conclusions. Highly recommended.

This report on what happened to Flight 447 is obsolete. Accident investigators have determined the cause. This summer, accident investigators said the pilots were not sufficiently trained to manually control the jet in the event of a high-altitude stall, which occurred after an air-speed gauge became obstructed by ice.
That same report could not explain why the pilots continued to keep the plane's nose up, contrary to usual procedure during a stall. The newly revealed cockpit conversations also provide few answers to that question. It's hardly a moot point: The Mail reports that "Both Air France and Airbus are facing manslaughter charges, with a judicial investigation led by Paris judges already under way.
The final exchange on the tapes includes pilot David Robert saying, "Damn it! We're going to crash. It can't be true!" Pilot Pierre-Cedric Bonin replies"But what's happening?" before the recording ends.

This was a fascinating accounting of the Air France airbus crash in 2009 that should not have gone down, considering its very complex safety measures built into this particular airbus, meaning computer mostly flies the plane and pilots mostly take off and land. It is explained as well as it can be explained from the experts points of view, though we may never know all of the details due to fact no black box or audio recorder of pilot chatter has surfaced yet, as far as I know.

This DVD is not the usual documentary reviewing the final reports on an air crash.
Rather this is expert speculation into the cause of the crash of the Air France A330.
Some day the estimations of the NOVA panel may be proved correct, but for now it is educated opinion.
Don't buy this DVD expecting any official conclusions in the investigation.
Having said that, this is a quality video for air disaster followers.
