The writing was good. I liked how John started developing his powers throughout the book. It was also nice to see that he wasn't about to be bullied around by Mark (who's a total twit but he eventually does learn the error of his ways). He does stick up for himself and does fight back so at least he's got a backbone. He is likable although he's your average every day kid with superpowers. However I couldn't really entirely like him as a character, it just seemed as if he was lacking in personality and there wasn't much to him except that he was not from Earth and has tremendous super powers.
I really did prefer the sidekicks in this novel; Henri, Bernie Kosar, and Sam. All three were my favorites. Both Henri and Bernie deserve a lot of kudos for what they went through for John (and their actions literally drove me to tears). Sam also proved to be a very loyal friend and pull through for John, and their friendship is a good one. It does give John a nice stable element in his life where he's always had to pick up his bags and go whenever things were to go wrong.
The plot was all right. It was really exciting and fast paced for the first part of the novel and as John learns new skills, and learns about his home world and people, you learn more about his background and why he's here with Henri. I liked reading this part of the book, and it also gives you information on Henri and what his purpose is.Read more ›
I really enjoyed this book, mostly because of te general plot. there are some reviews explaining the plot of the book here, so you should go read those. I thought the love-story got quite boring at most parts, but that's building up to the climax, which for me made up for it.
Mostly the love story bored me because I thought John wasn't very focused on his duties to Henri, and also just because I didn't really care very much about Sarah.
What makes this book worth the read is the plot behind that. If the love story bores you, just read on. I probably wouldn't have gotten through this book if it weren't for Sam. He really made the book interesting, and if you just stic around until the end, you'll see.
What I noticed for lot's of people who stopped reading te series after this book was that tey got annoyed with the main character, John. I want to tell you now, the next book is told from another Loric's point of view, who isn't involved with John until much later in the series. the boo after THAT is told from three points of view, and by that book, you WILL be hooked. I really need you to trust my judgement on that.
(I am reviewing ths while in the midde of reading this book for pobably the fifth time. this series s my favourite series ever, and if you just go through this book, you can read te Power f Six, and then decide if you like it. please jst do not stop here. and do not judge the book by the movie, either)
(I apologize for any typos, and just s you know, I did not spoil anything in this review, don't worry)
I thought the premise was fun and intriguing - John is number four of nine aliens from the planet Lorien who arrive on earth about ten years ago with their caregivers fleeing from the Mogadorian invasion that decimates their planet. These nine are entrusted with the responsibility of survival and eventual rebuilding of their planet and culture. The Mogadorians, however, have tracked them to earth an are killing them, but, because of a charm placed on them, they must be killed in order. One, two and three have been killed and John is next on the list. Then, it turns out, more may even be at stake, as the Mogadorians may be trying to take over the Earth as well.
The writing in the book was, at times, amazing and beautiful, and at other times repetitive. There were also a number of sentence fragments which stopped me in my tracks. Mostly I found the beginning and the ending interesting, with it dragging in the middle a bit. There are also a few things that didn't make sense, for example, his dog. John is supposed to be hypersensitive to anything strange going on in his life and he doesn't think it strange that his dog takes off into the woods and appears in an impossible location several seconds later?
The story is told in first person present from John's point of view, something which is very popular these days. This is the first book of this type, with this amount of romance told from a boy's point of view that I have read, so that was different.Read more ›
