The outer markings on this device are a nice deep black and do not seem as if they will dissolve from the exposure to ethylene glycol or other components of automobile coolant.
The number of disks floating indicates down to what temperature your coolant mix is good without risk of freezing.
The only cons are
1) No directions (for those new to auto maintenance AND for cleaning)
2) The bulb at the top seems quite oversized when compared with the amount of coolant that needs to be sucked up to make a measurement. It is very easy to squeeze too hard and then end up with coolant in the bulb.
After I use this, I always pull off the bulb and rinse both in warm water, as you don't want the coolant to dry in the measurement channel---especially if the coolant is "dirty."
