The device is well made, and fits a medium sized hand quite well, not requiring a lot of force to operate. The device operates like a hand held stapler, with the fulcrum at one end, for leverage. It measures 5.5 in. in length, 6 in. with the locking stem pulled out. The business end comprises a cherry seat, and a 1.5 in. prong, both metal, as is the hinge pin at the other end. Imbedded in the device is the V shaped metal linear spring that exerts the tension to open the device for use.
The translucent guard does contain the juice spatter, directing it in a downward direction. It is best done in a kitchen sink over a metal pan.
The device pits the cherry successfully at least 95% of the time, having less success if the cherry is not firm. It works remarkably well, but it is wise to visualize the extruded pit and hear the ping as it hits the metal pan , in case a pit is missed in the process.
A quick rinse under the tap cleans this device easily.
The only negatives I can really say are that the cherry juice does spray a bit and occasionally you do get a pit stuck in a cherry, but that's more of a feature of cherries than the pitter.
Cons
-a few pits didn't actually pop out but if you pay attention when doing it you can catch them and get them out
-a few pits split and pieces ended up getting missed and left behind
-made a HUGE mess on the counter and surrounding area from juice splatter (do outside or tape some rags up to cover everything

It worked very well on the whole and I don’t fault the design where it came up a little short. Mother nature doesn’t make identical cherries and it’s more those differences that are the downfall rather than the design
It’s comfortable to hold and use - doesn’t need a lot of strength
The splash guard is quite effective but not always so I wouldn’t wear white while pitting
It misses some pits and some hang and most shoot out so I suggest holding it over a container with sides as when they shoot out they also shoot out some juice splatter beyond the guard
The size shape and firmness of cherries varies and that directly impacts the results - mom nature
I used small and large cherries but not the really big Okanagan cherries which I think would be a struggle to fit in the holder so keep that in mind.
Overall I was pleased. I have looked at other pitters and having used this one and experienced the issues / shortfalls I don’t believe any of the others would perform better and likely worse.
I am new to making pies, and found out that I can be quite good at it.
I made apple, blueberry and wanted to try cherry pies.
I knew pitting was going to be a challenge. I found this OXO pitter here and with Prime, I could get it in 2 days, delivered to my doorstep. Ordering was easy, delivery was Great !
I was amazed on how well this simple device worked, pitted with ease and quickly as well.
I am off to the store to buy more cherries, pies will be made !
You won't go wrong with this OXO pitter.
