I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been burned before by gadgets claiming to help you get a perfect poached egg. I’ve tried the pods that you float on the surface, a little Tupperware thing you put in the microwave, the pans where you put water in the bottom and then slot little non stick egg holder things into a frame on top, and probably more besides, and of course, I’ve tried the non gadget ways; the vinegar in the water, the vortex, the ramekin, a combination of all of the above. No matter what I try, my eggs inevitably float off around the pan into some unknowable eldritch abomination of a thing, and yet again my dreams of a neat, round, runny poached egg are dashed.

Enter this Oxo diablo-looking thing. The water is actually touching the egg, so they really are poaching properly, not cooking in a sort of baked stovetop bain-marie. However, although a bit of egg does try to escape through the holes, it is mostly thwarted, and forced back inside. The result is, as you can see, a neatly poached egg, perfect for toast, eggs benedict, or (as in this case) huevos rancheros.

My only criticism would be not to trust the timings as suggested in the leaflet, as I found my yolks were almost cooked through, and not runny like I desired. That’s easily fixed on my next run, though, which will be very soon!

If you can already poach eggs, and just want something that'll keep them contained while cooking, this does the trick (anyone who's still searching for the perfect poached egg try this: boil the water, fill the pan and adjust temp so there are just tiny non-aggressive bubbles, add the egg and leave for exactly 3 minutes. Works every single time with all eggs I've tried, if you want the perfect runny yolk without any tools)! Really impressed with this, the poached eggs come out looking rounder, and less egg white escapes compared to just placing the egg in the water. Now I can get rounder eggs too with this little gadget. Just pops into the top rack of the dishwasher too so is super easy to clean. Photo isn't anything fancy but it shows the roundness achieved!

Love this little gadget, I love poached eggs but just can't pull them off. I have been using poaching bags but found I would damage them and loose half my yolk when tipping them out. This tool made poaching eggs a breeze, really easy to use and you end up with a proper poached egg, not rubbery, and not a flat boiled egg like you get with various other devices. The only thing I would say is they are quite large so you need a wide pan to fit two in. I like that you don't have to add cling film or oil or anything else, just crack the egg into the top and start timing. Simple.

Wer gelegentlich Eier pochiert kennt das: Man benötigt extrem frische Eier, damit im Salz-Essig-Wasser das Eiweiß im drehenden Strudel nicht zerläuft und man braucht sehr, sehr viel Übung. Meistens fehlt einem doch die Übung. Außerdem hat man so frische Eier oft nicht zuhause, wenn man mal Lust auf ein pochiertes Ei oder Eggs Benedict hat. Und da kommt dieser tolle Küchenhelfer ins Spiel.

Es funktioniert genau wie in der Anleitung des Pochierers beschrieben. Innerhalb weniger Minuten hatte ich mein erstes mit dem Küchengadget perfekt pochiertes Ei und ich war positiv überrascht (siehe meine Vorher/Nachher-Fotos).

Das Silikon Material scheint mir wertig zu sein und hat eine gute Haptik. Nach einer doch schon recht umfangreichen Produktion von pochierten Eiern kann ich noch keine Materialveränderungen feststellen. Es ist obendrein leicht zu reinigen und spülmaschinenfest.

Zuerst war ich stutzig über die enorme Größe, aber nachdem ich etliche Eier pochiert habe konnte ich feststellen, dass sich im Pochierer normale M-L Eier besser pochieren lassen als große XL- oder XXL Eier. Die kleineren machen hinterher optisch mehr her – und das Auge isst ja bekanntlich mit. Es kommt wohl doch auf die Größe an. Daher volle Sternchenzahl und eine Kaufempfehlung von mir für diesen praktischen Helfer.
