The reality of a day in the gulag

Having previously read "The Gulag Archipelago" I had some idea of what to expect. Details of a political prisoner's life in the post war Soviet Union are brilliantly illuminated through direct, simple text which reads almost like dystopian fiction, except this is based on real, chilling, horrifying experience. Even so, there are lighter moments when the prisoner is almost happy, avoiding punishments, being able to improve momentarily his situation and enjoy a bit of tobacco, or a tiny piece of sausage offered in trade from fellow prisoners for favours in helping one another. Living in the moment, not allowing bitterness or anger over injustices take over his soul, even while fully acknowledging that what fate has brought him is cruel irony...realizing that it is futile to scream and cry and bewail that fate, and yet have the strength to fully appreciate those few moments of each hellish day that are actually good.

I found this book through a BBC article discussing life in the Gulag. Safe to say, the book confirms all pre-existing notions. However, this book by Alexander Solzhenitsyn goes into details. The living conditions, the inmates, and their shenanigans, the constant threat of death. You get a first-hand feel of what life is in the Gulag, and you can't help but feel the hardships of these inmates over speculative crimes and how jaded the inmates are about their sentences.

What makes the book even more interesting and depressing is that Alexander Solzhenitsyn is only describing one day! This is a very short book but it will hit you hard, especially the last sentence of the book. So go ahead and pick this book up, you won't regret it. You might even appreciate your current life, seeing how you're lucky to not live in a country that will throw you to a work camp for dissenting- I'm looking at you North Korea.
