**Standalone Contemporary Romance**

He found me in blood and tears.
I stayed with him through darkness and fire.

We loved each other in the moment between innocence and bitter truth.
We were the kids easily ignored, who grew into adults we hardly knew.

We weren’t meant to last forever. And we didn’t.

He ran away.
I tried to move on.

Yet I never stopped thinking about the boy who had fought to keep me alive in a world that would have swallowed me whole. He was the past that I buried, but never forgot.

Until the day I found him again, years after believing I had lost him forever.

And in cold, resentful eyes, I saw the heart of the man who had been everything when I had nothing at all. So I vowed to hold onto the second chance that was stolen from the children we had been.

Sometimes fate is ugly. Life can be twisted.
And who we are can be ruined by who we once were.

For two people who had survived so much, we would have to learn how to hold on before we were forced to let go.

**trigger warning- contains mature themes that are intense and imply abuse, though are not graphic**

Due to the content covered in this book I feel it deserves 3 stars. I can not give it more than that because it took me two weeks to get through the book & I usually read three per week. I found Imi quite annoying. Obviously her life could not have been horrific, because she was able to move home when needed. I found the whole story line tragic. I felt for Yoss and all that he had gone through in his past, but I just couldn't feel it for Imi.

There were multiple duplicate words and typos in the Kindle version, to the point of being distracting in certain parts of the book. It is nitpicking, but I was sick of hearing how Yoss brushed his thumb across Imi's cheek & tucked her hair behind her ear. Also the beat, beat, beat of his heart and other things in triplicate was a little annoying.

Imi working in a hospital and taking the risks with her health that she did (without giving away any spoilers).

I also found the ending extremely rushed and lacking detail considering we had dwelled on the same things the entire book up until the last 20 pages or so.

Wow, how do I find words to do justice to this book? I loved this story so much that no words seem to be enough. A. Meredith Walters has created a heart-wrenching, poignant tale of love and loss. It's not just a story, it's a journey that you can't help but get sucked into from the very first page. I was so invested in these characters. In their past and their present. I felt every emotion right along with them. The despair, the hopelessness, the little pieces of happiness they were able to find, and above all else, the love.

“Once upon a time there was a girl who loved a boy. He found her in blood and tears. She stayed with him through darkness and fire. He promised forever. She believed him. A happy story doesn't always have a happy ending. She learned to be grateful for the temporary moments. Because in the end, that's all either of them had.”

This story is told in the past and the present, alternating between chapters. In the past, Imogen and Yoss meet on the streets after she runs away from a loveless home where she lived with her mother. Yoss has already been homeless for six years when he finds her. He brings her into his group of friends and keeps her safe. He does everything to protect her during their six months on the streets together. What starts out as a friendship, as his need to take care of her, grows into a powerful love. A love that breeds hope and seems like it can overcome anything. Over time, the weight of what it takes to survive a life like that comes crashing down around them. They are ripped apart by the ugly truth of who they are and the things they have done.

“We had felt like a force of nature. Unstoppable. Destined. We thrived on the passion and confidence of youth that left no room for doubt. We loved each other.
