The most vocal critics of Bill Clinton's presidency tend to be conservatives--think, for example, of William J. Bennett's The Death of Outrage--but there are those on the Left who are fed up with Clinton as well. Among them is journalist Christopher Hitchens (most prominently associated with The Nation and Vanity Fair), who has produced a slim but vehement volume outlining how "Clinton's private vileness meshes exactly with his brutal and opportunistic public style." No One Left to Lie To is the story of a man who took the Democratic presidential nomination and, having achieved office, began enacting welfare reform and anticrime legislation that surpassed the ambitions of all but the most ideologically loyal Republicans--and routinely plundered the GOP platform for other policy ideas as well.

Hitchens is particularly damning on Clinton's tendency to resort to divisive racial politics when it suits his purposes, as when, in the course of the 1992 presidential campaign, he refused to lift a finger to save a mentally retarded African American from state execution so he could appear tough on crime, then shortly afterwards hijacked a Rainbow Coalition conference to criticize rap artist Sister Souljah for the benefit of the attendant press. When he needs the black vote, though, Clinton will allow himself to be trumpeted as the most racially sensitive president in American history--if not, in Toni Morrison's memorably ludicrous phrase, "our first black president." Furthermore, the man who once connived his way out of the draft has become a chief executive so willing to use military air strikes as a means of foreign policy that, in the author's view, the United States is now a "potential banana republic."

Of course, there is plenty of vitriol directed at Clinton's conduct with regard to Monica Lewinsky (the woman with whom he admitted, under duress, to having had an "inappropriate relationship" consisting of multiple incidences of oral sex) and Kathleen Willey (who alleges that the leader of the free world merely fondled her breasts and forced her to touch--albeit shielded under some layers of clothing--his tumescent penis). In Hitchens's view, however, the sexual controversies are only the most prominent aspect of Clinton's shameful character, a moral condition that must be considered in toto. The book is short, with an argument that runs only about a hundred pages, but that's still more than enough room for Hitchens to serve up a comprehensive, blistering indictment suffused throughout by his dark wit. He sums up the failure of those fixated on Clinton's adultery to fully investigate his cronyism and financial shenanigans: "It's not the lipstick traces, stupid," Hitchens warns, "it's the Revlon Connection." --Ron Hogan

I've been denouncing this guy for years. Why? He sent America down the garden path when he signed Nafta. First policy he signed in Jan '93. Was the beginning of manufacturers firing the workers and closing the factories and relocating to China-Mexico for cheap labour. Abe Lincoln may have abolished slavery, but it's alive and well in the modern age. Clinton's opponent, Ross Perot, warned that "if you elect this man, all of your manufacturing jobs will go to other countries" and went on to say the big draw is the companies wouldn't have to pay medical benefits. Canadian Prime Minister Mulroney, in his final year of power, '93, signed off, as well, and yes, screwed Canada. Both of these perverts should be tried for treason-and in Clinton's case, rape as well (in the book)-but instead have streets and libraries named after them and command obscene amount of cash for speaking engagements. Hitchen's nails him.

There are some things that the author expounded upon that I know I still need to expand my knowledge of, but he provides a good frame of reference for me to explore those areas. There are many points that he brings out that confirm some of my evaluations of that time, and others that brought new understanding. I am glad I undertook to read this book.

No One Left to Lie To is not a political hatchet-job from a Republican or other political opponent of Clinton. Instead it is an all out attack on Clinton "from the left", as a central argument is that Clinton held himself out to be a Democrat/liberal but had no commitment to any of the underlying principles, instead repeatedly and consistently abandoning those principles in order to secure his position and increase his power. In this polemic, Hitchens tears Clinton to shreds, making a thorough and persuasive case that Clinton is one of the most sleazy, crooked and corrupt politicians in U.S. history. He develops the theme of "triangulation" across of a number of significant events in Clinton's career as a politician, including the military actions he authorised as president, his positions on welfare and racial injustice and his many sexual crimes throughout his career. He also highlights how the Democratic Party was wilfully blind to Clinton's major problems and as a result caused significant damage to their party and the political system in general.

In the book Hitchens also argues persuasively that Hillary is similarly reprehensible as a morally bankrupt corrupt political opportunist, notwithstanding the fact that this book was written in 1999 when she was just running as a political candidate for the first time.

Hitchens is witty and the book is full of bits of excellent writing. In addition, he makes razor-sharp arguments supporting his points and backs them up solidly with facts. A slight drawback for me is that I found his writing style to be a bit too disorganised, overly complex and emotional for my liking in certain places, particularly in the first half of the book. Overall, No One Left to Lie To is important reading for getting a true understanding of Bill Clinton and his significance as a political figure.

There are a number of questions raised by other reviewers that support the value this book contributes to political assessment of the Clintons. Mr Hitchens was not sued because he made sure to verify sources and he presents his material in a way which allows the reader to make their own judgement of the events and personalities described. What ever the hatchet job aspects of the Starr Commission Mr Hitchens reminds us Bill Clinton delivered an agenda more suited to the Republicans than his own constituency. The analysis of triangulation is breath taking and sets the scene for why so many people around the world currently appear to have little faith in populist politicians. The second intriguing strand in Mr Hitchens book is the focus on the morality of Bill Clinton and by association Hillary. He reminds us these were, before being politicians, lawyers. He reminds us of the strands that led to impeachment-as well as Monica Lewinsky, involved grubby money. He reminds us of the sordid demonization of Gennifer Flowers and the attempt to destroy her using political and media spin. Christopher Hitchens more importantly reminds us of the role of a journalist. It is to uncover a story layer by layer and look at what the pieces of a story reveal. After reading this, I shudder to think that following Barrack Obama, Hillary Clinton may be the next Democrat presidential hopeful. This is almost a scalpel sharp dissection of Bill and as a subtext, Hillary. Almost is the apposite word here. It sent me towards my copy of Hunter S's articles from the same period of American history. Always rely on Mr Thompson to fill out the unsaid and he did not disappoint.
