It's such a shame that this game is nothing beyond its technical prowess. It's abysmally short (5-7 hours) with absolutely no replayability or unlockables. As well, this is a game that tries so hard to be a movie that it forgets it's a game. Of the length of this game that I mentioned, a massive chunk of time is spent watching cutscenes, slowly walking around, and doing quick time events. I'm afraid to actually calculate how little time is spent on actual gameplay.
The graphics are superb, the sound and music is perfect, the voice acting is on point and the story is awesome. If you are one of the few "Offline, single player, campaign playing, narrative based gamer" then you'll love the game. The only reply value however is the same as when re-watching a film.
No frame rate issues. No glitches. No game install.
If you can get this for 20 bucks or under I'd recommend it.
The problem with this game and why it's hated by many is the short length of its story. It took me about 10-12 hours to beat this game, i've heard of people beating it in 5-6 hours. There's no multiplayer or different choices to be made on a replay (linear as it gets). But then again, this game has 0 filler, everything is a major mission that's critical to the story. There's no side quests or fetch quests here. The combat is actually pretty good, with proper cover mechanics, fun weapons to play around with. Another major complaint is the use of quick time events, especially annoying is when it's used in crucial moments in the game.
With all that said, this game is a must play at its current price. This is a technical masterpiece of a game and it has a sense of maturity in its storytelling. I feel like this game was targeted for an older audience who miss the old days where games were linear and to the point. There's absolutely no filler content and by the time you're done playing you'll be wanting more.
Pros: 1) First and foremost its the graphics that will draw you in, as the level of detail is unparalleled to any other game
2) The story is great, took me 7-8 hours to finish the game, but I was engaged all the way through
3) The sound and musical score is great, you'll hear distant carriages being drawn, individual water drops and overall
the sound lends to the atmosphere of the game in a superb way
4) The world that the Order 1886 creates is very unique and you want to explore it
Cons: 1) Game is very linear in two ways. It plays more like games from a decade ago where the developers are guiding you from point A to point B to showcase the story, which can be good or bad dependant on the type of gamer. And the second and biggest tragedy is there are instances where the game makes you relinquish control by forcing quicktime events. In regards to the quicktime events, they are very well done, and 2/3 of them are quite enjoyable...but, its the lack of control that will leave you somewhat dissatisfied when it comes down to 1/3 of the scenarios.
Overall, I am happy with my purchase. Bought the game for $40 and that was more then fair.
