William Hay has captured the horror of trench warfare by Canadian soldiers during World War I. The story of Bill Dawson, a member of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry is filled with courage, sorrow, despair, and success as he fights to stay alive in the battles that take place between the German and Ally armies as the face each other in northern France and Belgium in 1917.
Hay's characters come to life with great sensitivity and insight. They do not glorify war, but show its grim reality.
This is an excellent read.
