As someone who has been on the patient side one too many times it was nice to get a doctors perspective as both a medical professional and advocate for a dear family member. As a patient and advocate for a loved one, I always felt inadequate with the steep learning curve disease brings into your life as well as the emotional distress. It reassuring to know that that even medical professionals share our struggles. Your brother was very lucky to have you by his side. Thank you for sharing your story.

A remarkable book

The Other Side of the Bed is the unique story of a practicing physician's three-year labor of love, supporting and advocating for his older brother — also a physician — as he struggled with leukemia. This is an important book that carries valuable lessons for any reader.
I recommend this book both for physicians and non-physicians alike. For physicians, it offers thoughtful advice on how better to interact with patients and their families. And, for patients and their families — on the other side of the bed, as Mishkin puts it — this book provides useful insights to help navigate the stress and the emotion that a hospitalization can bring.
Mishkin clearly loves the practice of medicine, but at the same time recognizes that it is not perfect and does not shy away from highlighting its shortcomings. And this is where the book is most useful to those on both sides of the bed. By highlighting common pitfalls, this book will, I believe, help both doctors and patients in collaborating more smoothly and effectively to achieve better outcomes.
Some years after his brother passed, Dr. Mishkin learned that the medical staff that had treated his brother viewed him, in his role as an advocate, as “a little bit of a loose cannon.” And, at times, the author is self-critical. Still, I suspect that if he had to do it over, the author would do very little differently. Mishkin fought for his brother with intensity, with selfless loyalty and with love. And so, while this book certainly offers practical advice, it is also a book about perseverance, about strength in the face of adversity, about resilience in the face of grief and about the unbreakable bond between two brothers.

I am a patient of Dr. Mishkin. This book is a great read.

Dr. Mishkin is my gastroenterologist. In 2006, I had a cyst in my pancreas that required the Whipple Procedure to remove it. Since then, I've had a number of long term effects from the surgery. I continued to see many gastroenterologists, surgeons, dieticians, and even tried holistic healers with no luck. I was finally referred to Dr. Mishkin. I immediately liked him. I was immediately comfortable. He was down to earth, funny, and more importantly, interested. Not only did he listen to me, he actually had ideas and treatments that he would like to try. For the first time in my life, I found a doctor who was never late to our appointments, genuinely caring of my situation, and willing to help no matter what. If something didn't work, we tried something else. Yes, WE...it was always a conversation, not just some solution to rush me out of his office. In the end, my symptoms remain a mystery but we're trying to find ways to manage them. However, if I'm ever not feeling well, have a question, or would like to see Dr. Mishkin regarding anything, he's right there for me. I am one of the patients he mentions in his book that has his cell phone number. The comfort of knowing I can get in touch with him directly rather than going through making, scheduling and waiting for appointments.
When my nurse practitioner told me he wrote a book, I was unaware that he had lost his brother. I was unaware of where his amazing ability to relate to and take care of patients derived from. Dr. Mishkin is obviously a great person and doctor but to know now what he went through, what his brother went through, I respect him that much more. My biggest issue with the health care system was that I was just a number. Dr. Mishkin does not treat me or any of his patients that way. We are real people, with real issues and he knows that. He learned it firsthand.
I have to admit, it took me a while to read this book because the more I read, the more I cried. Reading about what this caring man and his family went through continued to bring me to tears. I am lucky to have Dr. Mishkin as my doctor. He is unlike any other and I appreciate the time and effort he continues to give to me. This is a great book for medical students, and current physicians to read. They can learn a great deal about researching diagnosis, interacting with other health care professionals, and treating patients with respect from Dr. Mishkin's experiences. Attention, compassion, and interest for a patient goes a very long way. It's extremely comforting to know that he cares so much.

A must read for Healthcare Professionals

The Other Side of the Bed is extremely well-written and I would strongly recommend this book to anyone. I believe physicians, caregivers and patients alike can benefit from reading this book. Dr. Daniel Mishkin takes the reader through a very personal and painful time in his life. He quickly becomes his brother’s keeper, as his brother Dr. Barry Mishkin is diagnosed with leukemia. It is my hope that the this book will help medical professionals better understand the difficult journey that their patients endure. In matters of life and death, one cannot have too much empathy for the patient and their family. I would also like to see patients and families be advocates for their health, and to be involved in their treatment plans. The ultimate goal is to read and embrace the lessons in this book, and to allow them to positively shape your views. I firmly believe that anyone can find value in this book, after all we never know when we will be on the other side of the bed.

I was fortunate to stumble upon this book during a particularly difficult time in my life, I discovered this brave story from a physician that seems to truly understand his patients. This is a gift that cannot be taught from a textbook to have such a deep understanding of a patient's struggle... this book gave me hope as it reminds me that there are physicians like this in the world, serving humanity with a kind soul and sharp mind. It is one thing to learn about medicine from a book and to understand it in your mind... it is another story entirely to understand it in your heart and to PRACTICE with heart.
The struggle between pride and humility is a true and challenging balance to find. Thank you, Dr. Daniel Mishkin, for portraying this so well in this story with Barry Mishkin. Your story will remain close to my heart, and I would encourage those looking for an insightful and emotionally charged narrative to read this book. It has helped me remember that the good days are worth the tough days.
A must-read, especially for those in the medical field and those on the "other side of the bed."

I read this book within a few days. The chapters held my attention, and I found myself not wanting to put this book down. It is both tragic and uplifting at the same time. As you read, you feel like you are in the hospital experiencing the ups and downs that come with a cancer diagnosis and the treatments that follow. Dr. Mishkin also provides examples from his training and practice. The examples help the reader to better understand what doctors and patients go through on a daily basis. I would recommend this book to medical professionals, especially students.
