Insightful book on the Ottawa food industry with a lot of interesting stories and background info about the major owners of restaurants, food stores or producers. This book gives the reader a good sense of where the Ottawa food scene has come from, how it is growing and where it is heading and there are exciting times ahead!

As a fan of the authors' blog, I was quite excited to read this book. Unfortunately, the book was uneven and only peripherally touches on the culinary history of the city. This likely does have something to do with the fact the city has a "young" food scene. Overall, most of the featurettes are underdeveloped and the book is lacking in cohesion. It is as though it can't decide if it is a history book or a guidebook with some culinary history thrown in for good measure. Furthermore, all it features are the usual suspects of the Ottawa food scene. I would have loved to know more about the history of immigrant populations and their impact on the restaurant industry. The book is descriptive and avoids the richness of a piece true to historical scholarship. There is an absence of a connection to politics, sociology and all the other variables that affect historical trajectories.
