The Otterbox Commuter was the case I was looking for. To be honest up front, I wasn't thrilled with the price when I was in the shopping process. Easily 2-3 times the other cases that were in my short list of contenders. Not to mention the highest case to phone price ratio I ever expected to consider. But after my usual exhaustive over-searching and reading tons and tons of reviews, I made peace with spending the money on the Commuter. And I was glad I did.
It arrived in that Frustration Free Packaging they promised, although I personally didn't really require it. We're a 4+ scissor household :P The case was easy to install, no problems or issues encountered. It isn't extremely apparent in the images, but there is an inner wrap that is made of a dense rubber type material, which then gets wrapped by an outer hard plastic shell. The inner case was an easy install but the outer shell was a tight fit. This is good though, as long as you don't need to take it on and off which most people probably don't. The dense rubber of the inner case protrudes in front of the screen nicely to ensure it is protecting the phone when faced down. It has enough grip to give me confidence in my hand and that it will hold on surfaces. I'd compare it to the feel of an average pencil eraser, if anyone still remembers those. Rubbery but doesn't give much. I like it a lot. The outer shell is good with a nice design on the back. My only complaint is the shell is fairly smooth, even with the dot pattern and grooves on it. If you are looking for it to grip the surface it is on, you have to put it face down. Not my first preference, but it works. A wish would be that there was a strip or patch of the rubber material on the back to grip surfaces. Not a deal breaker, and would probably make the product designer in charge of aesthetics cry, but would be functionally awesome.
Where the case shines for me is the connectivity ports and flaps. They did a really great job on this. The covers for the micro usb and the headphone port are solid and reliable. Stays shut but comes open easily. Not much else to say about it than that. The holes for the microphone, speaker, camera, and light/flash are perfect. Along with the materials, this is where the money you pay for goes. My biggest gripe about cases is usually that the maker didn't care too much about how ports line up and their accessibility. This one is flawless in that department.
If I had to give some critiques, it would only be a couple and they are minor. Probably just me being nitpicky. The hardware buttons are a little difficult to press, especially at first. The sleep button is pressed a lot during the day so this was the one I was initially a little disappointed with being sorta hard/mushy. Definitely wasn't crisp as I was expecting. A couple weeks into using the case, the press is closer to what I would want it to be and is reliable now. Something between this and a little more use will be perfect. As long as the button covers don't break down, I'm a happy camper. The volume buttons still need some work since I don't use them as much, but it is getting there. Last very minor observation is that the sides where the rubber part meet the glass tend to gather some dust and dirt debris here and there. I'm not going to fault the case though because that is just how these types of cases interface with the phone. I can't imagine a better fit that would prevent against this so I mark this as merely an observation and nothing that a little maintenance every once in a while wouldn't take care of.
In summary, very happy with this purchase, which is saying a lot considering I spent more than I was looking to initially spend, so my expectations were high. Those expectations were all met, so 5 stars it does get. Hey, that rhymes.
Recommended all around the internet, including right here.
The Commuter series is real tricky to get the little cling-on screen protector on (which I ended up throwing away because it messed up beyond fixing; if the tiniest speck of dust gets on the under side while you're installing it, it's impossible to remove it and it leaves a bubble, impossible to remove).
The side buttons on the phone don't work well and are hard to push with this case.
It feels strong enough to protect the phone if it's dropped but I have not dropped it yet to test that aspect.
