Product description
Review
"Outside the Charmed Circle can guide you outwards and inwards to expand your experience of yourself and your understanding of others. The ideas, viewpoints, and practices are offered with a proper balance of challenge and reassurance that truly engage contemplation and action. This book is for anyone who dares to know themselves and to walk the ever-growing edges of awareness."―Ivo Dominguez Jr., author of Keys to Perception
"Outside the Charmed Circle is a page-turning, thought-provoking delight from start to finish. Misha Magdalene has written a '101 and beyond' user-friendly handbook for magical and social change. As a sexologist, it's now one of my top ten gender education books. As a polytheist pagan, one of my top five magical treatises. I won't leave home without it."―Amy Marsh, EdD, DHS, CH, CI
"The depth and heart that Misha Magdalene has put into this work is a triumph for this topic. This is a voice and perspective that's not only sorely needed, but proves once and for all that the circle is truly big enough for all of us."―David Salisbury, author of Witchcraft Activism
"Absolutely filling the void, Outside the Charmed Circle is a much-needed, magical exploration into gender and sexuality that is quintessential for the times we live in. Beautifully balanced and thorough research combines with accessible exercises and rituals that are suitable for a wide variety of humans―engaging body, brain, and spirit throughout. From diving into queerness, tackling consent, and addressing body awareness to demystifying sex magic and adjusting traditions, this book smoothly tackles many complicated issues that newcomers and experienced practitioners alike will appreciate and learn from."―Laura Tempest Zakroff, author of Weave the Liminal: Living Modern Traditional Witchcraft
"A gem of a book, Outside the Charmed Circle challenges us to examine and question our built-in assumptions about gender, sexuality, consent, and the power dynamics we unconsciously have about magic and the pagan community. Misha Magdalene shows us how to go beyond the masculine/feminine binary of working with magic and to adapt spellwork to our own needs whether we're men, women, both, neither, or anything in-between. From step-by-step sex magic, to the spiritual power of setting boundaries and saying 'No,' to even the politics of consent with the gods themselves, this book has it all for those seeking to expand their horizons of gender and sex within magic."―Tomás Prower, author of Queer Magic: LGBT+ Spirituality and Culture from Around the World

About the author

Hello, beautiful creatures! If you’re here, odds are even that you’re wondering who I am and what this is all about. So, let’s get down to it, boppers.
» Who are you?
My name is Tamsin Davis-Langley, and I write under the pen name Misha Magdalene.
I’m a multi-classed, multi-geek, multi-queer witch with a degree in gender studies and a slightly odd sense of humor. I’m an initiate of multiple lines of traditional witchcraft, including Anderson Feri and Gardnerian Wicca. I’ve also been known to dabble recklessly in both modern ceremonial magic and grimoiric goetia. I’ve been blogging since 2001, negotiating the online world since 1987, playing Dungeons & Dragons since 1981, and listening to weird music since birth. I live in Providence, Rhode Island with my polymath partner and two adorably destructive black kittens. My gender pronouns are she, her, hers, and not up for debate, though I’m always delighted to discuss the lengthy history of the grammatically correct use of singular “they” in English.
» What do you do?
I write about magic.
More specifically, I write about gender, sexuality, geek culture, pop culture, philosophy, theology, religion, history, political theory, and the ways in which all of these things intersect with the practice of hands-on, DIY spirituality. My book "Outside the Charmed Circle: Exploring Gender & Sexuality in Magical Practice" was published Llewellyn in January 2020, and deals with pretty much all of those things.
Between August 2017 and January 2021, I wrote a blog for the Patheos Pagan Channel, also titled "Outside the Charmed Circle." During it's lifespan, I wrote about the spiritual value of discernment, the inherent political nature of Pagan and polytheist practice, practicing safer sex magic, strategies for countering abuse in our communities, and the true-life story of how Dungeons & Dragons led me to witchcraft.
Like I said, I write about magic.
» What do people say about you?
Here’s some of the fulsome praise readers have heaped on my head:
“Well reasoned and unapologetic… Misha Magdalene is a treasure!”
“Educational and challenging… an excellent combination.”
“Always thoughtful pieces that critique themselves.”
“Sometimes when I’m having a bad day, I just go back through this page and read all the posts I’ve missed. It helps remind me that there are wonderful people in the world doing wonderful work and talking about the hard things in a beautiful way.”
I love my readers.
And then, of course, there are the critics:
“…pretty boring and unoriginal critique.”
“Cultural Marxism.”
“This might come as a shock to you, but you’re not actually different from anyone else just because you’re gay or into magicks.”
“Just. Shut. Up.”
I adore my critics.
Whether you’re a reader, a critic, or simply curious, I appreciate your interest in who I am and what I’m doing. Cheers!

As I re-read sections of the book, now as a paperback, to write an extensive reivew on my own blog, I realized that I was getting even more out of a second reading! I now know I'll be returning to this book again and again!
I believe this pioneering book is destined to be a classic. It is certainly one that I will take from my shelf again and again, and will continue to recommend whole-heartedly to all who are interested in such topics.
Well done, Misha Magdalene! I look forward to your next book!!!

I would normally require a couple of hours to read a book of such length; I chose to invest three days, to process and savour... which continues tho' I finished the reading part last week.
I am recommending this to everyone I know who has interests in magical or queer matters, without hesitation. I am more aware of aspects of both (and their intersectionality) than I was aware I has overlooked or misunderstood before experiencing Mischa's book.
It is a lexicon, a guided tour, a spiritual journey, a gentle initiation into unfamiliar territory, and a genuine pleasure to read.
