Product Description

When handsome California surf god Lincoln Savage suddenly rolls into Ocean Beach like a rogue wave, shy beauty Simone Bianchi’s foundation is shaken. No longer under the thumb of her domineering father, she’s made a simple quiet life for herself and her fluffy fourteen pound Havanese pup running a surf shop in her hometown of OB. Long ago she gave up her dreams for a future with Linc.
But now the notorious lead singer of the Dirt Dogs has returned, and Simone is reluctant to admit that she’s still vulnerable to his killer dimpled smile and easy charm. She finds that although she’s stowed away the mementos, it hasn’t been as easy to erase the memories of their epic summer love.
It seems he hasn’t forgotten, either.
Is the recording contract he’s offering merely a pretense?
Or does he have something more in mind?
Does he really believe that they can just pick up where they left off, despite all the bad luck and heartache?
And is she willing to risk everything again for one last chance at love?

•••I listened to the Audible Audio Edition of this book•••

I have loved Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross ’s performances since the first time I heard them work together! They play very well of each other. This is just as good as every other first in a series I have heard by them! Each character is unique and well performed. I hope they continue on with this series as it was a really fun listen. They bring a depth of emotion to every performance that I dont think I would find by just reading the book. I can't imagine it voiced by anyone else. More please :)

This series must be listened to (or read) in order. This is the first book. I can't wait to listen to the next one!

Simone has never gotten over her first and only love Link Savage. He hurt her worse than she ever thought possible. Choosing fame and fortune over their relationship all because she felt the need to do the right thing. If only things had been different. Now he is back with a proposition and all she wants it to be left alone... Or does she? Is what she felt for him truly buried in the past? Does she dare give him another chance? Or should she just keep to her solitary existence? Is love worth the risk?

Lincoln never loved anyone except Ash until he met Mona. She was unlike anyone he had ever known. Growing up with an abusive father who hated him and told him how worthless he was didn't help his self esteem any. At least he'd had his Aunt and Uncle ... And Ash. Ash was the brother he never had as well as his best friend. Mona was a breath of fresh air and he wanted to make her his from the moment he heard her singing on the beach.

What a great second chance romance. I loved reading these two blossom through out the story. They each had their own insecurities that they needed to overcome before they could be together. It was just so sad how many years they spent apart when you could tell they loved each other immensely right from the start of their story.

Linc is a handsome surfer turned rock star who is beating back his past to find himself a brighter future. He has to prove to himself just how great of a person he is and how much he can accomplish on his own before he can fully give himself to a relationship.

Mona knows that she only has one true love that's why 15 years after her break up with Linc she's willing to open herself up to the devastation and heartbreak only a soul mate could cause. She is a strong woman but she had to fight to become that way and she gives Linc a fight to win her back again.

“What does that mean?” I asked Linc. ...
“That there’s a good wave, a surf-able wave coming up behind you,” he answered his eyes still trained on the ocean. “Up to you to turn around and take it or get out of the way before it crashes over you.”

HASH(0x9b0276fc) out of 5 stars Poignant Story! July 19 2015

This may be my favorite from Mankin yet! She said she loved these characters and it shows in her writing. I love them, too.

The way Simone "Mona" and Linc's story is told plays well. It's told in three parts, Present, Past, and Present, and in dual POV. And the way Mankin presents Mona and Linc's backstory was clever. We meet Mona after 15 years have passed following the end of her ill-fated relationship with Linc. She's made a nice life for herself but there's something missing. When Linc shows up on Ocean Beach again, Mona's isn't sure she's ready or even willing to listen to anything he has to say. She'd thought she'd put that part of her life behind her. When we meet Linc, he's grown up. Seeing the difference between his younger self and the man he's become was startling. He's always been a determined man, doing everything in his power to win what he wants. And he's determined to win back the love he stupidly threw away.

Reminiscing over photos of that summer, we learn the story of the summer they fell in love. We see the connection these two forge - it's a powerful love. Their relationship was intense and although they were young when they found one another, their love grew organically and I felt it. The Past section also conveyed the very different people Mona and Linc were that summer and that made the contrast with who they are now that much more stark. Their childhoods affected them both significantly and it showed in their personality and actions.

Back in the Present, Mona and Linc have to determine if their love is a love that, despite the tempestuous waters they've navigated, will endure. Watching as these two find one another again, grabbing onto the second chance they've been given was awe-inspiring. I happen to believe that things happen for a reason so I like thinking that Mona and Linc had to endure some trials and tribulations to get to a place where they really appreciated what they have.

I adore Mankin's style. Her use of many definitions of 'outside' is clever. I appreciated her surfing metaphors. The fact that Mona and Linc are older characters was also a plus. Add all that with the delivery of a second chance love story with rock stars and surfers and you get an incredibly poignant read!

HASH(0x9d011234) out of 5 stars Sexy Beach Romance July 19 2015

Outside is like no other book I have read in that it is about young love and second chances and the story spans 15 years! Wow! I was caught up immediately in the beginning of Linc and Simone and how they had not seen or talked in 15 years and yet even after all this time Simone is still mad and hurt. What happened? The story starts in the present but then goes back to the past where it all began and this is the part where you will fall in love with a young Linc and Simone and the relationship that grows between the two. The writing is just flawless and smooth and the character development is off the charts. Linc and Simone are both so young and have so much to deal with that forces them beyond their love for one another. Both characters struggle with insecurities that can easily make or break any couple. This book was not at all what I expected, it goes beyond a romance and will take you by surprise! I learned a lot about surfing and as I read this book I could feel the sand in my toes and imagine what it was like to crash those waves! The great beach summer book and five big stars! !

HASH(0x9b22d414) out of 5 stars Loved this book from beginning to end and then even a little bit more! July 19 2015

As one of my go-to authors, Michelle Mankin continues to deliver books that warm my heart and make me smile. She has the ability to take a second chance love story and give it the freshness that I seek. Successfully combining the exhilarating world of surfing with the sexiness of Rock and Roll: Outside is every reader's dream come true!

Simone Bianchi thought she had found forever love with Lincoln Savage. But that was 15 years ago and since then, her life has been quiet with her constant companion Chulo and her surf shop in her beloved Ocean Beach to fill her days. And now Linc is back and he wants nothing more than to claim his 'Mona' once again. Under a ruse to have her sign papers to work together on a song they co-wrote all those years ago, Linc will stop at nothing to convince Mona that they have another chance.

Oh my. This book is just so beautiful. The way the author describes the sights and sounds of Ocean Beach, you can almost smell the breeze coming off the water. We get both the past and present lives of our couple and watch as the love they thought was meant to be as young lovers, get decimated by some rash decisions and foolish words.

I love the way Lincoln is so sure of himself. His passion, his want, his need for his woman was off the charts moving. Getting the more mature and self-assured Lincoln is just what Mona needs. It's all we can do to hope that she sees how he truly is her HEA and the missing piece to the broken puzzle she has remained all these years later. With wonderful secondary characters in Karen and Ash and even a lovestruck Patrick, this book has it all. The author even touches upon the sometimes tragic consequences of a rock and roll life which gives this story the realism she is known for.

This is a love story that is truly touching. I devoured every page and then went back and read it again. I'm hopeful that some loose ends that intrigued me in this story will be explored further in future books in the series. This is a great crew that you will fall hard for, just as I did.

A huge 5++ stars.

HASH(0x9b0167b0) out of 5 stars “I’ve seen you at your best and I’ve survived you at your worst July 19 2015

“I’ve seen you at your best and I’ve survived you at your worst.”

I had read the Brutal Strength series by Michelle Mankin and ABSOLUTLY loved it so when I saw this new series, starting with Outside, I was very excited and could not wait to read it. Ms. Mankin has a way with creating alpha male rock stars and hot, sassy women who love them. Outside is no different. Lincoln so sexy and Simone has a hidden strength that is amazing. I also loved the other characters. This book is well written, but has WAY too much angst for my taste. I had a hard time believing the plot line. Their time together was so short, 15 years of pining was hard for me to swallow. There is also an aspect of the plot that seemed to be top secret because it took FOREVER for the details to come out, and even in the end, the reader still didn’t know all the facts, I found it VERY frustrating. Plus, I found one of my pet peeves in a book, a mix up of facts. So although I have loved Michelle Mankin’s work, I did not love this book.

“You were the best thing that ever happened to me, Lincoln Savage. And the worst.”

HASH(0x9baad7c8) out of 5 stars Beautifully Turbulent Journey July 19 2015

"You're wrong. I haven't forgotten. I can't forget any of it."

Outside is a powerfully turbulent journey for a young couple whose immediate and devastating attraction and love for one another burns hot, but eventually tumbles into the depths. Their past hurts and the damage they carry creates a situation in which neither is ready to open one's self completely to the other. After 15 years apart, can the two finally open their hearts fully to one another? Will they find their second chance? Or will the past events and betrayal be too much to bring these two together?
