HASH(0xa3f63780) out of 5 stars Great book for getting your Feb. 1 2008
By S. Buist - Published on
Format: Paperback
Dr. Brownstein offers an easy to understand book about how to overcome one of the most common health issues - thyroid problems. He addresses hypothyroid, hyperthyroid and Chronic Fatigue / Fibromyalgia. I was thrilled to see that he addressed the issue of poor converters of T4 to T3, importance of good thyroid supporting nutrients, diet and detoxification. Most doctors will just throw Synthroid at you and call it good without treating the underlying cause. He refers to the importance of iodine and that is covered in his other book "Iodine: Why you need it, Why you can't live without it." That is also an excellent book. All therapies mentioned can be performed by a Holistic Doctor, Alternative Medicine Doctor or Naturopathic Medical doctor. [...]

HASH(0xa3c2e768) out of 5 stars life changing health advice Jan. 31 2009
By Cynthia - Published on
Format: Paperback
When I ordered this book, I had been diagnosed but not treated accurately. The book gave me the information I needed to take to the doctor. I dismissed the endocrinologist (the last of three)who had put me in the money making machine of inefficiency as regards resolving my health issues(but which was very efficient for making the money they desired)and went to the internist who has the ability to listen. Wow. I now feel great since the the internist cooperated in making changes according to the recommendations Brownstein writes on the meds, diet, et al., and have high energy. GET the book!Get someone who will listen to you. I went to the internist having outlined the book in the appropriate areas. Good communication is the key.

HASH(0xa3bba600) out of 5 stars A MUST for Thyroid Patients! April 25 2003
By A Customer - Published on
Format: Paperback
As a practicing physician and someone new to the "alternative" world of medicine, Dr. Brownstein's book was indeed helpful. My wife has Hashimoto's and the detail and references in this book have helped me to guide her therapy. Easy to read but detailed, this book supplements Richard Shames' "Thyroid Power: 10 Steps to Total Health" as an excellent addition to any thyroid patient's reference library!

HASH(0xa48b65d0) out of 5 stars Good overview book on holistic approaches to thyroid disorders July 19 2010
By Nbpt - Published on
Format: Paperback
Author David Brownstein is a board certified Medical Doctor and the director of the Center for Holistic Medicine in West Bloomfield, MI. This eye opening book is a relatively easy read for the thyroid patient as it gives an overview to Dr. Brownstein's holistic approach in treating thyroid and other issues. Dr. Brownstein starts off by describing how his training in medical school was inadequate for dealing with thyroid issues. He was motivated and intrigued by Dr. Broada Barnses book "Hypothyroidism, the Unsuspected Illness". Dr. Barnes devoted a lifetime to researching and treating thyroid issues. This was apparently motivating enough for Brownstein to depart from practicing conventional allopathic medicine and take up a holistic and Functional medicine approach.

As a practitioner of functional medicine he uses western allopathic medicine as well as alternative approaches and encourages natural remedies to help the thyroid before prescribing hormones.. He digs and tries to find the root cause of the symptoms. He acknowledges that labs don't tell the whole story. He will not rely 100% on lab results as he looks at the patient's overall symptoms, personal and family history. He will use naturally desiccated thyroid hormones such as Amour or Nature-throid, if he feels the need. He offers a theory on the root cause of Hashimoto's disease pointing to a deficiency of iodine and antioxidants. Currently mainstream medicine does not know the root cause for Hashimoto's. He points out, how can you adequately treat a condition when you don't know what is causing it.

Dr. Brownstein is a very big advocate of taking iodine in the form of Lugol or Iodoral(a mixture of iodine and iodide) for thyroid and many other disorders. This use of Iodine is very controversial as allopathic medicine believes that high dose supplementation of iodine may cause hypothyroidism, and may worsen Hashimoto's symptoms. Dr. Brownstein firmly stands behind his approach and backs it up with case histories and research done by Dr. Guy Abraham and others.

The book also talks about Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Coagulation disorders, diet, detoxing and other issues that may affect or look like a thyroid issue.

This is not a self help book but rather an overview to his holistic approach on treating thyroid disorders or what appears to be one. I recommend this book for anyone (patient or practitioner) wishing to learn alternative treatment approaches to conventional allopathic medicine. Dr. Brownstein maintains a website called [...]. where you may learn more about the many conditions he has successfully treated. To learn more on the use of Iodine, see Dr. Brownstein's book, "Iodine, "Why you need it. Why you can't Live Without It". Also see Dr. Guy Abraham's website at [...] where many of his research papers are available.

HASH(0xa39a65a0) out of 5 stars Great Book On Holistic Treatments July 1 2002
By Tom - Published on
Format: Paperback
This is one of the most thorough books that I have ever read on thyroid problems. Dr. Brownstein not only covers hypothyroidism, he also reviews how to treat Graves' and Hashimoto's disease. As a physician, I have found this book invaluable. This book is a must for those who have thyroid problems and those that treat thyroid problems. I recommend it to all of my patients.
