"Genetic Engineering as cosmetic surgery: would everyone get to do it? If not who would and who wouldn't? And how would that affect the social balance of our current world structure?  What if a girl who had it all - including a longer life - fell in love with a boy who didn't?" - Lee Strauss

ETERNAL LIFE IS TO DIE FOR

Seventeen year old Zoe Vanderveen is a GAP--a genetically altered person. She lives in the security of a walled city on prime water-front property along side other equally beautiful people with extended life spans.
Her brother Liam is missing.

Noah Brody is a natural who lives on the outside. He leads protests against the GAPs and detests the widening chasm they've created between those who have and those who don't. He doesn't like girls like Zoe and he has good reason not to like her specifically.

Zoe's carefree life takes a traumatic turn. She's in trouble and it turns out that Noah, the last guy on earth she should trust, is the only one who can help her.

PERCEPTION is a dystopian romance Young Adult novel that takes place in the not too distant future in a world changed by climate extremes, natural disasters and impending wars, and where scientific breakthroughs cause class divisions--both financially and philosophically. It explores the clash between faith and science and how differences can separate us as enemies or ally us together. And in some cases, even in the midst of betrayal and personal crisis, there's room to fall in love.

What readers are saying:

While I don't always like dystopian novels, I enjoyed this. The author found the first-person viewpoint difficult to manage in the first few chapters, actually dropping out of character to describe some of the futuristic elements of the world, such as when she had Zoe, a teen girl, describe the front door of the only home she's ever lived in as "surprisingly light". I can't believe she's still being surprised after seventeen years. But this irritating problem faded out by the third chapter. In the same way, Zoe, the viewpoint character, is hard to identify with and hard to like in the early chapters, but she becomes much more identifiable as the book progresses. I disagree with the reviewers who claim that the book argues that religion is good and science is bad. It merely presents a world in which science has been carried to a degree in which it has become evil; it is the only subject studied at their university, for goodness' sake! It scarcely presents the case for religion at all, merely casting as a hero a boy who happens to be a Christian. He doesn't push his faith on anyone at any point in the novel. If merely being a Christian makes a person one who pushes religion down people's throats, something's wrong somewhere. The plot was interesting, the challenges faced by Zoe and Noah believable and suspenseful, and the serious growing up they both had to do was well worked out. I would gladly read the next in this series.

Mediocre story at best. Hate the shoving religion down your throat bit. The science part isn't any better. Don't know why it's 'best' seller,

The character development and story-writing is alright, however I would have to agree with another reviewer on the 'shoving of religion'. I didn't care for "Religion is great and Science is evil" mantra portrayed throughout the book. Got it for a free download, but wouldn't pay for it.

I enjoyed this one. Some of the characters are a bit thin but the two main ones work very well. The changes they go through is a beautiful example of the effect of new experiences.
