Having said that, the product description should say that the cable can be easily extended, when it’s locked, by pressing the cable retract button. You can extend it this way all the way to the end-stop.
So, if you are expecting to lock something that requires the cable to maintain its length after locking, like ski poles or a zipper, this will not do the trick.
The cable is 1.5mm in diameter and the housing is made of plastic - nothing very sturdy about that.
This lock may keep a 10 year old from stealing your stuff but that’s pretty much it. If that’s what you are after then by all means buy it, otherwise look for something better.
I first bought the smaller model, the Retractasafe 50. After two month traveling in Asia, it was still like new. I did not encounter a single mechanical problem with the 50. But the gage of the cable is so tiny, someone with a pair of scissors could cut it easily I'm sure of it. And the cable on the 50 is a bit too short. So I returned the 50 for the bigger model, the 100. The difference is massive. The cable is at least twice the gage of the 50. The four rotating wheels ( vs three for the 50) on the locking mechanism feel stronger. The cable of the 100 is approx. 6 inches longer than the cable of the 50. (would have like that extra length in Asia when trying to secure my carry-on to a chair or a table).
Cons : It's quite bigger and heavier than the 50. I was a bit surprised when I received my Amazon package. But the safety of my carry-on (and everything inside) comes first, so I do prefer the 100 over the 50.
So I strongly recommande the Retractasafe 100.
A lot of cheap combo locks (Master especially) are really unreliable: you set the combo and then can't open the lock with the same combo. The dials on this have good clicking action and the combo always works.
Either I have terrible luck with this kind of product, or else they're all poor quality garbage. Based on all the reviews I've seen for these kinds of retractable locks, the latter would seem to be true. Buyers be warned.
It offers less protection than the "Ski Key" but it is definitely lighter and has the advantages of not needing a key.
It seems that it would take a lot of effort to cut the threaded-wire cable. Once locked, I can't consistently prevent the 24-inch cable from being extended.

It's simple to use: press button A) releases the 29 inch/74cm steel cord which you place in the corresponding hole, scramble your 3 chosen combination numbers, done. To release line up correct numbers and press button B), re-pressing button A) shoots the cord back into the main body of the lock. The lock itself is small lightweight heavy duty see through plastic (7x5cms). This wouldn't stop a determined thief but would certainly make them reconsider, slow them down and cause bystanders to wonder what was occurring.
Great piece of simple kit for peace of mind but obviously not as secure as using a much heavier padlock and chain.
