Pain Machine is horrifying not because of gore and drama, but because it's so easy to imagine that it could happen here, now. It's a fast-paced novel that on one (disturbing) level explores the subjective nature of pain. Chronic pain is debilitating in more than physical ways -- it strikes at our reason, and our compassion and our ability to cope.
Pain Machine struck a chord with me. I just can't shake the idea of it. Definitely recommended!
