It handles very well. I use it with Olympus EM5 II camera. It balances very well. And it is not very heavy given the focal length offered. Please note - if you have never dabbled in this kind of focal length, you will find this to be a heavy lens. However compared to similar focal length for APSC and full frame cameras, this lens is very light.I love the combo. There are switches for OIS, for focus limiter, and for switching to MF. It feels premium with good use of metal without becoming too heavy. I love it. It is weather sealed and please if you plan to use it in inclement weather, make sure your camera is also weather sealed. I use it with OMD EM5 II which is also weather sealed. I still use a rain protector as I am old school and don't want to take a chance :)
In my case, I switch off lens OIS use the OMD EM5 II body IS. I get very sharp pictures hand held. I tried the lens OIS by setting my EM5 II to give priority to lens IS. I get very sharp images with this setup as well. So which combo to use? Both works very well and I have not made my mind yet.
Very fast with my OMD EM5 II. SAF is instantaneous, and accurate. CAF is also fast and instantaneous and accurate. I have set my camera for CAF to give priority to accuracy. I get less shots, but the ones I get are in focus. CAF + Tracking - OMD EM5 II has limitations here and there is no limitations from the lens side. I do not have OMD EM1 or Panasonic cameras to be able to test the CAF Tracking abilities.
Sharp, vibrant colours, and excellent contrast. If someone is not getting sharp pictures, please try mounting on a sturdy tripod and use. Why? Perhaps to rule out their lens and camera holding technique. At 800mm focal length, even micro shakes are exaggerated resulting in blurry pictures. I can comfortably handhold and get sharp pictures. However I have been doing photography, and birding for more than 10 years now and have developed handholding skills. The lens gives me very sharp images with excellent colours, and contrast. Love the image quality.
Accessory tripod mount
The lens can be used without the add-on tripod mount as the place where it attached to the lens is also standard tripod mount. So use this only if you wish for more clearance between the tripod and lens or perhaps if they wish to use the tripod mount as a carrying option. To save space, I am not using the tripod mount. It is good Panasonic has bundled this and it is nice.
Same like the tripod mount, the lens has a built in sliding hood as well as an additional deeper hood. This extra hood I use as I want to protect the front of the lens just in case I drop my gear. I hope I never drop my gear but its life and best to be prepared :)
The pouch in my opinion is bit big and ok as in it should do a good job to protect the lens during carrying. I do not use the pouch. Again it is good it is bundled by Panasonic :)
Yeah it is pricey. However you get what you pay. For focal length offered, for being weather sealed, for the sharpness, the price in this case is justified.
Overall an excellent lens and I love it. I highly recommend this lens if you want to get into super telephoto arena on micro four third system.
